Monday: Labor Day! 

Tuesday: We discussed forum posts. We also took more notes over 10 most important events in the past. 

  • Civil War
    • 1861-65
    • war between north and south over slavery and rights
    • The south failed to secede
    • North's goal was t keep union together and bring south back in
    • Emancipation Proclamation made no more slavery on of the goals
    • South new their train better
    • North had more people
    • South was better with weapons
    • South had a better reason to fight
    • north had better transportation
    • north had better/bigger navy
    • north had more materials
    • north had more food 
    • North had better government
    • south gave power to states
    • South had better generals
    • Abe Lincoln killed by John Booth
    • Appomattox court house where general lee surrendered to General Grant
  • Reconstruction
    • 1865-1877
    • period of time after the Civil War in which the South had to be rebuilt and reorganized and brought back to the union
    • President Lincoln and Johnson wanted to be easy on the South
    • That changed in the 1866 Congressional election 
    • Andrew Johnson- Democrat
    • Abe Lincoln put Andrew Johnson as VP to get democratic votes
    • Congress tried to kick Andrew Johnson out of office
      • 1 vote short to kick him out
    • Rebuilt South economically, socially, politically, and physically
    • Split South into five military district controlled by US Army
    • 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments passed
    • Freedmen's Bureau set up to help former slaves
    • Southern governments taken over by "carpetbaggers"-northerners (republicans) that went into south and take over their government
      • carpetbaggers stole a lot of money
      • scalawags are southerners that helped northerners (traders)
    • These governments set up schools, raised taxes, built railroads, helped ex-slaves, and industrialized in the South
    • Governments were accused of widespread corruption by southerners
    • Reconstruction left a very deep divisions between the northern and southern states
    • once the northern governments and military left the south, traditional rich, white racist males took back over
    • Jim Crow laws and segregation was established
    • African- Americans would not see the rights they should have had in 1865 until 1964
    • The Compromise of 1877
      • Unwritten deal between northern and southern politicians that settled the heavily disputed 1876 Us presidential election
      • Republican Rutherford B. Hayes was awarded the White house over Democrat Samuel J. Tilden
      • Hayes would then remove the federal troops from the south ending reconstruction
      • Hayes needed 4 states to win, Tilden needed one

  • Wednesday:  We took group test. 
  • Thursday: We took the second part of the test.
  • Friday: Today is the 14th anniversary about 9/11. We watched a video about 9/11. Talked about the 12 tips to a successful presentation.
