Civil War 1861-

United States Vs Confederacy

Main causes: Sectionalism, Slavery, States rights, Tariffs, Election of 1860 & Secession

North was more based on industrialization

South was farming-tobacco, indigo, cotton

Developed huge economic difference between them (Sectionalism)

Two sides grewe completely apart from one another

North didn’t need slaves to get their work done

The rich owned a ton of slaves in the south

North didn’t have much care about slavery-some saw it as evil or immoral

State’s rights-Articles of Confederation, state government had most power

Grew with the idea that they are an independent country, united

State Rights-Should be up to the state

Tariffs-North is where the money is, and south is more agricultural.

Tax on imported goods

Point of having tariffs so there is no unfair trade, gets people to buy American products and goods.

United States had tariffs on all manufactured on imported goods.

Natural resources didn’t have any tariffs.

South had to buy goods from the north dependent on northern goods.

North benefits from high tariff but south didn’t at all.

Big cause of North and south growing apart

Election of 1860 & Secession

South decided to succeed and formed the confederate states.

Fueled the civil war

Missouri came in as a slave state 1820

Maine-became a free state

Any state north of the line would be a free state

Any state south would be a slave state

Compromise of 1850

-California wanted to come in as a free state (huge concern for the south)

South got a promise of pocket of sovereignty and strict fugitive slave law.

If there is a slave in the north, the south can come up and take the slave back.d

Dred Scott Decision-`857- was a 7-2 decisions by the US supreme court

Supreme court said that blacks were not US citizens and could not sue in court

Government couldn’t abolish slavery

This was a huge victory for the south

Suddenly, slavery could be open anywhere

Greatly upset abolitionists

Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia Maryland, stayed loyal

The north was going to win:

-Had abundant resources

-Larger population

-Emergence of new military leaders

-Leadership of Lincoln

-Determination of African Americans to end slavery.

-THE NORTH HAD MORE RESOURCES

Thursday - Bruns finished the Power Point with going over Reconstruction.

Carpetbaggers and Scalawags-Northern born, white republicans who moved south after the war and takes over the government. The south hated these people.

-Scalawags-Southern born white Republicans who believed these people were betraying the South.
