How did education change in the late 1800's and early 1900's?

William Torry Harris thought that education would lift all classes of people into civilized life. By the civil war most states had some education but kids did not have to go,between 1865-1895 states passed a law that you had to attend 12-16 weeks each year
Main core classes-Science, Math, History, English. Lecture-most people couldn't read or write, so they'd listen. Like an assembly line. Bell rings, next class for 45 minutes, bell rings, next class, etc

 Ch. 8.3:

What laws and restrictions were put on African-Americans and other minorities after Reconstruction ended?

everyone had to pay a poll tax: annual tax people had to pay in order to vote. Had to do a literacy test, had to read and write. Grandfather clause:if your father or grandfather were qualified to before January 1, 1867. you could, allowed poor whites to vote but still kept blacks out.

Jim Crow laws: segregation laws. Separated blacks and whites in public places. different bathrooms, water fountains. Spread to hospitals, parks, public transportation, schools, etc. Also affected Chinese and Hispanics. Dept peonage: if you owned a debt to someone who owned farmland, you'd work on their land as a slave until you payed it off.

Explain the significance of Plessy v. Ferguson.

- major court case that set up segregation, set up to have separate things for black and whites BUT equal, ended up not being equal at all
