Monday- Pajama Day!!!

Forum post leaders discussed their topics and we continued chapter presentations. 

John, Chad, Connor and Dylan-

Labor Unions-

  • Blacks and Whites Joined together to make unions so that they could improve their conditions
  • Working at this time had:
    • No paid time off
    • Children working dangerous jobs
    • 14-16 hour work days
    • Small wages
  • In 1882, 675 people were killed in work related accidents

Conditions-

  • The wages were low
  • As conditions for laborers worsened, workers realized they needed to organize
  • National Labor Union in 1866

Union Movements Diverge-

  • Unions split- Craft and Industrial
  • AFL- Continued all the way through, still working and alive today. 
  • Better wages, shorter work week

Were labor unions successful in achieving their goals?- Yes- gained their shorter work week

Strikes Turn Violent-

  • 1877- Workers from Baltimore and Ohio Railroads struck in protest of 2 wage cuts within 2 months
  • Stopped 50,000 miles of railroad activity

Tuesday- We reviewed for the group test tomorrow

Wednesday-  My group tested while the rest of the class watched "The men who built America"

Thursday- Continue testing

Friday- I was gone!
