All of that land was worth half a billion dollars. There was one land grant that gave both Union Pacific and Central Pacific 10 square miles of public land for every mile of track laid in a state and 20 square miles of land for every mile of track laid in a territory. In 1860's, They began laying down tracks. Central moved eastward from Sacramento, and Union moved westward from Omaha. Civil war veterans, Irish and Chinese immigrants, Aftican Americans, and Mexican Americans did most of the hard work. Workers of the Union pacific laid up to 8 miles of track a day. Both companies reached Utah by the spring of 1869.
