-What problems did farmers face on the Great Plains?

  • Farmers needed to keep borrowing money to make it, putting them in debt
  • Losing money because crops were being destroyed
  • Bland Allison Act of 1878 
  • The farmers alliance- Helped farmers get education 


-Who were the Populists and what did they believe in?

  • People that worried about the middle and lower class
  • People's party
  • Wanted to give everyone a voice in government 
  • Graduated income tax
    • Amount of money that people are expected to spend
  • Direct election of senators 
    • people from the state choose who are the senators

-What impact did railroads have on the US?

-Better/ faster transportation

-Brought forth giant corporations 


-Why we are many people upset with the railroads?
-Farmers were upset wiped out farms and villages

-What did the Grangers or government do to regulate the railroads?

-Several laws were passed (wanted to regulate rising prices of railroads)

-What was Social Darwinism and how did it apply to business?

  • Believe that humans evolved
  • Politicians believe that businesses can grow to be as big and powerful as they want

-Explain how companies formed monopolies(vertical/horizontal integration, trusts).

  • They just kept buying other businesses 
  • Horizontal- Buy out steel companies 
    • Things would be cheaper
  • Vertical- Buy out your suppliers (resources, transportation)

  • Sherman antitrust act
    • Stopped businesses from making monopolies

-What are labor unions and what is their purpose?
