The main part of Greece is on a peninsula
Ionian Sea, Meditrianan Sea and Aegean Sea are the three seas that surround Greece
The rest of greece is made up of islands-6000

Importance of Sea
The sea was important to Greece-
Trade, fishing, protection, tranfortation
Did not live “on the land” but “around the sea”
Most greeks lived within 85 miles of the sea

A very significant mountain to Greece
Agriculture Issues
Due to the Mountains Transportation was dificult
Greeks did not have fertile soil
Due to these issues they never had a large population
Some leaders went to look to expand

Valued duty, strength and discipline over freedom, beauty and learning

Women- not citizens
2nd class- came from other city states
3rd class- slaves
Women
Run familiy estates while husbands were off at war
Had more freedom then women in Athens

Focus was to focus on war
From age 7-30 was training
