Greece is a small country in europe

The main part of Greece is on a Peninsula

Greece is surrounded by 3 major bodies of water, Mediterranean sea, aegean sea, and ionian sea

the rest of greece is mad up of islands- 6000 (227 being inhabited)

The sea was important because of trade, natural barrier and agriculture, transportation

\most greeks lived with in 85 miles

mountains cover 3/4 of ancient greece

M.t. Olympus-holds 12 greek gods

due to mountains travel was difficult

greece never had a large number of people

Records of olympics date to 776 B.C. 

Lasted one day, eventually turned to 5 days

Started as a tribute to Zeus and has a mythological argin

Started up at again at 1896 in Athens, Greece

heavily influenced by the egyptians and mesopotamians civilization,

known for trade on the seas

they were generally peaceful,

known for advanced city's-knossos, not over crowded, plumbing, toilets, sewers

could have been tsunami, earthquake,

could have been over ran by the mycenaeans

Warring city states

  • Polis-City, like minneapolis or indianapolis
  • Acropolis-A settlement in a city on high ground used for defence and a place to discuss politics
  • Monarchy- Government ruled by one person
  • Aristocracy- Government ruled by a small group of wealthy, landowning families
  • Oligarchy-Government ruled by a few powerful people
  • Tyrants-Powerful individuals who seize control from the government-- Can be Good or bad--Today we see it as bad
  • Democracy- Ruled by the people--Athens had the first--Only allowed citizens to participate

Education in athens

  • only sons of the wealthy
  • Started at 7 Years old
  • Studied reading, grammar, poetry, history, math, music, login and public speaking
  • Athletics were stressed
  • Once older, students went to military school
  • Girls were educated by mothers
  • Girls learned how o clean, cooking, child-rearing, etc...

Sparta

  • Sparta was very powerful and had it's own army
  • Built on a military state
  • Sparta conquered other city-states to gain wealth and power
  • valued duty, strength, and discipline over freedom

Classes

  • Men were born in sparta citizens
  • women were not allowed to become citizens
  • 2nd class were people who moved into sparta
  • 3rd class were slave

Sparta women

  • Service to sparta was stressed
  • some military training
  • athletics were stressed
  • They had quite a bit of freedom--could run family estate

Spartan warriors

  • learning how to right was not important
  • started training at 7
  • trained solders until 30
  • athletics also stressed
