US Native American Policies - *Assimilation - A way for making the Native Americans "white"
Putting them on reservations
Wanted them to become American - no longer live the way they did - look like us - So they didn't have to fight them
Kansas - Nebraska Act 1854 - Significant because it pushed the Indian Tribes further west
Indian and Oklahoma Territory Merge in 1907 forming state of Oklahoma - Government opened up Indian and Oklahoma territory for settlement
Sooners - settled in Oklahoma before they were supposed to
Destruction of Buffalo - A way to eliminate the Indians
After Indians being pushed many starved to death
Dawes Act - 1887
Gave land to Native American families to farm - 160 acres to families, only 80 acres to unmarried adults
Ended tribal ownership of land
those that do this will be granted US citizenship
Goal was to "Americanize" Native - Americans
Native-Americans lost much of their land
Not required but the other option was not good (killed, or lived on a reservation)
Ended in 1930's under President Roosevelt's Indian Reorganization Act
