Week of September 18 - September 22

Monday - U.S Native American Policies - we wanted the Native Americans to become American so that we didn't have to fight them anymore 

Assimilation - Way of making the Native Americans "white"

Kansas-Nebraskan Act 1854 -Pushed the Indian Tribes west

Indian and Oklahoma Territory Merge in 1907 forming the state of Oklahoma 

The Government opened up Indian & Oklahoma territory for settlement 

Destruction of the buffalo was a way to eliminate the Indians

Dawes Act of 1887 - Gave land to Native American families to farm - 160 acres to families, only 80 acres to unmarried adults 

Ended tribal ownership of land 

Goal was to "Americanize" Native- Americans 

Native-Americans lost much of their land 

Not required but the other option was not good 

Ended in the 1930's under President Roosevelt's  Indian Reorganization Act

Thursday - Battle of Little Bighorn - Fought on Little Bighorn River (Montana Territory), The Indians won

Battle of the Tongue River - The troops wanted to make peace with the Indians, US Military won

Battle of Wounded Knee - Troops vs. Indians, Soldiers killed a lot of the Indians 

Sand Creek Massacre - In Sand Creek, Colorado, Part of the American Indian War, Soldiers attacked Indians.

Friday - Gone for Stucco
