September 14th- September 18th

Monday: We went over and wrote in the countries in our maps. We than put in the finishing touches to our government projects that we're presenting tomorrow.

Tuesday:

Syrian Refugees- War from ISIS has forced half of the Syrians from their homes to seek refuge in European countries. Even before ISIS, Syria was at war between Syria and the protesters that wanted a new change in government; US supported protesters, People have died in the process of migrating out of Syria; drowning, starving, over-heating, etc. Two brother refugees have been trying to sell flowers to make enough money to survive; miss their education. Their mother didn't want to go through smugglers, so she stayed behind while her sons went to Lebanon. 1/4 people you meet on the streets in that country are refugees. Hundreds of stories like this. 310,000 refugees have died, 4.1million  refugees abroad.

Country Project Presentations:

Capitalism: A social system where the producer has the choice what will be sold and at what cost, not the government. People are not constricted by the government's say.      5 countries who have Capitalism: Germany, USA, United Kingdom, China (is a communist country but is becoming more capitalist-not a great example), and Japan, and Mexico.

Socialism: A political and economic system where property, resources, and distribution are controlled by the government, for the betterment of all people. Wealth isn't controlled by the rich. Examples: China, Belgium, Finland, Denmark, Albania, Canada, and Bulgaria. Canada is a mixed economy, since it is also capitalist. No country is 100% capitalist or 100% socialist.

Wednesday- We were assigned an extra credit opportunity to watch the GOP CNN debate tonight

Antibiotic Restaurant Scoring-A restaurant report came out by Friends of the Earth, scoring the possible of antibiotic animal foods. Many chains received an F on the scoring of the safety of their meet, based on the amount of antibiotic meat. Organizations are concerned that if people eat too much meat from animals who used antibiotics that we will gain diseases that will be immune or resistance to antibiotics. If antibiotics don't work, than many people will die of stuff they don't usually die from. Starbucks got 1/36 (an F; lot of antibiotics), Domino's 3/36 (F), Denny's 3/36 (F), Burger King 3/36 (F), Wendy's 6/36 (F), Subway 11/36 (F), McDonald's 20/36 (C), Chick Fillet (B), Panera Bread (A), Chiplotle (A). 0/36- KFC, Dairy Queen, Pizza Hut, Papa John's.

Thursday-

Weaknesses of Socialism and Capitalism:

Socialism- takes away people being hardworking because is wealth is evenly distributed then working harder won't gain people any more money or benefits

Capitalism- the top %.1 has more money then all the other middle class Americans combined; wealth inequality

FRIDAY-

We took the class quiz over the Asia Map of the Middle East. My class got a 10/10. Then we started going over the Former Soviet Republics Map of Asia. Then we talked and watched a video about low expenses in life/poverty. Lastly, we started going over some more class presentations.

Minimum wage is $7.50. President Obama wants to change it to $10. Anyway, if you take 7.50 times 40 hours a week, times four months a week, gets you $1200 a month. $1200 dollars a month minus taxes and rent could be about $800, but another major expense is for food. That is 200-300 dollars a month to eat. Entertainment would probably be the lowest expenses. This includes shopping. Another major expense is car fuel and insurance. These add up for a lot. Also, if you live in an apartment, sometimes you have to pay for utilities like electricity and water. Garbage collection is also something you have to typically pay for. You pay every three months for garbage collection and this is about 30-50 dollars. We talked about all of this information because there is a story about a lady who has a son that lives on only a very small amount per month.
