Monday-
We went over the maps in class and worked on our Socialism presentation which we will present tomorrow.
Tuesday-
We went over the Southeast Asia map and began our presentations. We will start with the Middle East tomorrow.
ISIS is trying to take control of Syria. Syria has been in a civil war for a long time. Arab spring is where a group of young people rose up against the government trying to get better education and pay. The government of Syria fought back. The protesters and the government clashed. We are kind of helping the Syrian government, but we support the protesters. President Assad was in charge of a very strict government. Many young Syrian children haven't been to school in years. One in four people you meet in Beirut, Lebanon is a Syrian refugee. Many refugees won't make that choice to board ships because it is so dangerous. Smuggling to Europe is very illegal. Six and a half million people are displaced in Syria. 4.1 million have left Lebanon. 310,000 have died. 10.6 million are still at home.
Capitalism- the producer has the choice of what will be sold at what cost within reason. An individual has their own freedom and is not restricted by the government's say. It's a people government. Competition is a big part of it. People own and control their own businesses. Germany, the U.S., Japan, and the United Kingdom are just several examples of socialism. China has a Communist government, but they are becoming more and more capitalist. The weakness of capitalism- there is a wide gap between rich and poor.
Thursday-
We presented on Socialism yesterday! We are also taking a class quiz tomorrow over the Middle East map. We watched the CNN Debate in three minutes. Marco Rubio brought his own water. Trump gets along with everyone. Jeb Bush smoked marijuana. Trump faced a barrage of insults. He was constantly under attack. Scott Walker, Ben Carson, and Scott Walker have seemed to decline from this debate, also Huckabee and Ted Cruise.
Most Americans know the system is skewed unfairly. The bottom forty percent of Americans have any wealth. The top 20 percent has a lot more money than we think they do. Socialism is equality. $17000 is the poverty line. The poorest Americans don't even register, the middle class should barely be considered middle class. The top 1% has so much money that they have 40% of America's wealth. The middle class and the rich have only 7% between them. Mixed economy is a mix of capitalism and socialism. European and Canada are more mixed or equal. Socialism is government control. Socialism takes away working hard. Socialism takes away drive. The weakness of capitalism is that the top 1% has forty percent of the wealth. The Waltons are mostly in the top ten. High school starts mattering in the real world.
Political systems deals with how the government is run. Direct democracy is a form of government where the society votes to create laws. Swizterland has a long tradition of direct democracy along with Uruguay. California has 20 million voters to vote on state laws. Vermont and some parts of Hungary also have direct democracy. What is popular is not always right. Peanut butter is not banned. A representative democracy is a type of government where the society elects leaders who vote to create laws for them. The United States is the oldest and most stable representative democracy. Great Britain has two legislative branches that represent their citizens, parliament and the Prime Minister. India is the world's largest representative democracy. Germany has two representative branches, Bundesrat (states)and Bundestag (Parliament). Australia is a fully elected representative democracy.
Friday-
$7.50 is the minimum wage in America. Obama wants to raise it to $10. Social Security money pays retired people now. You would have a $1000 take home. Take out rent, taxes, insurance, utilities, fuel, and food and there's only a couple dollars left. A single mom survives on $7.50 an hour. She makes $230-240 every two weeks. This would roughly be $6,240 per year. She lives on food stamps. $216 for food a month on food stamps. The father of her son is incarcerated. The average cost of raising a child is $245,000.
Mixed economy is a combination of Socialism and Capitalism. We put our trust in representatives in Representative Democracy. Constitutional Monarchy is where the king and queen have a tiny bit of power, but they have to pass laws with an elected Parliament. The Queen of England has no political power. The Queen Elizabeth is, however, the Head of State. The Royal Family has duties, they are beloved. Absolute Monarchy is a government where the King or Queen can do whatever they want such as King Salman of Saudi Arabia. King Henry the eighth for example. Brunei, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Swaziland, UAE or all absolute monarchies. England, Canada, Denmark, Jordan, New Zealand, Spain, and Sweden are all Constitutional Monarchies today. Complete power can go to your head. The power is limited by the Constitution in a Constitutional Democracy, and is mostly a beloved tradition. Joseph Stalin and Hitler are two examples of Dictatorship. Dictatorship is absolute power.
