Ch. 5.1:

-Describe Native American culture.

Young men hunt, women would butcher what they got. Children learned through songs, stories, and good examples. Polytheistic

-Why did settlers/people move to the Great Plains?

Settled the land to build railroads and towns for an economical start to the country. Gold, farming, ranching

-How did the US gov't deal with Native Americans in the mid to late 1800's? What were their policies?

Passed an act to designate Great Plains as one big reservation for the Native Americans, specific boundaries

DAWES ACT- government gives 160 acres to the Native Americans. Unmarried- 80 acres, married- 160 acres. Used for their own personal uses. Leftover land was sold to settlers that wanted to start their own farms. Government took everything away from the settlers.

-Describe a cowboy's life.

Cared for animals, Texas Longhorns, horses were used for transportation, US cowboys style was influenced by Spanish cowboys, traveled across the US, different trails

25% of cowboys were African American, non-stop work, 10-14 hours a day, ages 15-40, 3 months per drive, 1 cowboy to 250-300 cattle, $100 a month, slept on ground, bathed in the river,

-What challenges did settlers face on the Great Plains?

-What problems did farmers face on the Great Plains?

-Who were the Populists and what did they believe in?


Ch. 6.1:

-What caused the Industrial revolution to really take off in the late 1800's?

-What were some new inventions in the late 1800's and what affect did they have on people's lives?


Ch. 6.2:

-What impact did railroads have on the US?

-Why were many people upset with the railroads?

-What did the Grangers or government do to regulate the railroads?


Ch. 6.3:

-Tell me about Andrew Carnegie.

-Tell me about John D. Rockefeller.

-What was Social Darwinism and how did it apply to business?

-Explain how companies formed monopolies(vertical/horizontal integration, trusts).

-How did the government try to regulate business?

-What are labor unions and what is their purpose?

Were labor unions successful in achieving their goals? Explain/Give examples.
