Monday- Dawes Act of 1887 was like the Native American Homestead Act. In 1930's they changed it back to how they wanted to live. Railroads helped settle the Great Plains. 1850- 1890 was when most railroads were made, which revolutionized America. Grass hopper plagues would happen and eat everything in there path.
Tuesday- The negative aspect to railroads was prices and debt. The railroads charged farmers high prices due to lack of competition. Rockefeller and Kearny were the richest people in the world and the railroads worked against Rockefeller and said they wouldn't transport his goods. Instead he built a pipeline to transport his goods instead of a railroad. The Grange, the Interstate Commerce Act, and the Populist were how the people faught back against the railroads. The National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry was set up to help farmers. This encuraged families to work together to promote well-being of farmers. The first state laws that benefited farmers said that railroads and grain elavators had to charge fair prices. The interstate Commerce Act was the first federal law that stated that railroads had to charge fair prices. Populist helped farmers out of debt, wanted to give everyone a greater voice in government, increase money in circulation, graduated income tax, direct election of Senators, single terms for president, secret ballet, 8 hour workday, restriction on immigration.
Wednesday- The gold standard wes when our money was backed up by gold. The silverites were people that wanted money backed by gold and silver so that there could be more money in circulation. William Jennings Bryan backed the bimetalism to help the common American. Direct election of Senators by the people of the states improved representation of the common people.
Thursday- The populist fought for the everyday american. The industrial revolution took off in the 1800's. Lucas and I have James Duke for our presentation.
