1. Students will understand the impact the Industrial Revolution had on the United States.This was a period from the 18th to 19th century in which there were many changes in agriculture, manufacturing, mining and transportation.2. Students will understand the impact immigration and urbanization had on the United States.Urbanization started in the 1900s in the midwest. There was many problems with this urbanization there were many fires and houses were made of straw and would start on fire easily. There were also alot of floods and sanitary problems. Ellis Island is where many ships brought immigrants to the United States. When they came they would have to go through many tests and answer some questions. One of the diseases they got sent back for was Tuberculosis.3. Students will understand the impact of the Progressive Era on the United States.The Progresive Era was a period of reformation. It lasted from 1890 to 1920. A lot of change came about for the better of the common folk. There were four goals ; protecting social welfare, promoting moral improvement, creating economic reform, fostering efficiency. The progressives made the work place safer by taking working hours from 10 to 8 hours a day. Little children and immigrants worked in factories and many died because they couldn`t read the language. Today OSHA can shut your business down if they find out your bisiness is not safe. Prohibition is the selling and drinking of Alcohol. Dr. Ben Rush thought that drinking alcohol cause temperments and abuse and thought it should not be sold anymore. The Keting Owen act was an act that would not let products go out of state if it was made by Children. Children would work 16 hours a day and if they fell asleep they could have an arm or leg cut off. The 15th amendment allowed blacks and minorities to vote.4. Students will understand the impact imperialism had on the United States and world.Imperialism is the policy in which stronger nations extend their economic, political, or military control over weaker territories. We had a really navy and a pretty strong army. The Platt Amendment stating that Cuba could not make treaties that might limit its independence or permit a foreign power to control any part of its territory, the United States reserved the right to intervene in Cuba, Cuba was not to go into debt. We helped Cuba get their independance and then took it over. We also took Hawaii because both Hawaii and Cuba were easy refuling stations for ships. We bought Alaska from Russia for 7.2 million dollars. The Boxer Rebellion in China there were thousands of Chinese people died during the fighting. The impact on the United States was under McKinley the United States had gained an empire.5. Students will understand the causes for US involvement in World War I and the effects it had on the United States.One reason was that Germany was sinking ships and killing many Americans, because the ships they were sinking were passenger ships. Germany also tried to make an alliance with Mexico with the Zimmerman note. It was a note that tried to get Mexico to fight against America. We also started to trade more with Great Britian and traded less with Germany, which made them mad. Germany stated that they would also sink passenger ships with out warning.6. Students will understand the political, social and economic changes that occurred in the 1920’s in the United States.On Dec. 2 1927 the Model A was introduced and it came in two colors unlike the Model T which just came in black. It was also a much smoother ride and could go 71 mph. Route 66 was also made from Chicago all the way to Los Angeles. With the constuction of roads and invention of automobiles families could go on long trips. When automobiles were invented that launched the construction of motels, shopping centers, and tourist camps. Also repair shops and gas stations were invented. This created many new jobs for people. Americans owned 40% of all wealth. The average income for a family rose from $522 to $705. Flappers were young women who dressed in the latest fashions and danced.7. Students will understand the causes and effects of the Great Depression.A cause for the Great Depression is the stock market crash of 1929. The Crash happened on October 29,1929. Two months after the crash stockholders lost 40 billion dollars. Another reason is that 9000 banks were failed and alot of people lost their money. The few banks still standing were very cautious about giving out loans. Also people stopped buying things because they didn`t have the money, which caused less items to be produced, which cut some workers, who then in turn didn`t have money to buy things because they didn`t have a job. The Smoot-Hawley Tariff that was created in 1930. It helped protect American Companies.
