1. Students will understand the main political and economic systems of the world.
Capitalism- An economic political system where businesses are privately
owned. People own and control business. The countries that have it:
U.S., Canada. It came from the early middle ages. Free enterprise
system is relatively the same thing. Democrats and Capitalism go well
together because people own it. Socialism is the opposite of
Capitalism. It's where the government controls business. Socialism and
Communism go together because they are designed to make people more
equal. We are mostly Capitalism but we have some Socialism. Obama was
labeled a socialist when he wanted government provided health care.
Dictatorship- example would be Hitler and his Nazi party. It's when one person is control of the whole group of people.
Anarchy- a state of lawlessness which in other words means there areno leaders and the country is ran pretty much on its own. An example
would be Somalia (which is currently an Anarchy) another would be
Japan.
Monarchy- a form of government in which one person, the ruler, has all power; there are two types of Monarchy. Absolute Monarchy-
isn't limited by it's law. Constitutional- title is limited to a
constitution, have little or no political power.
- Countries with Absolute Monarchy: Brunei, Russia (until 1905), Oman, Saudi Arabia, Nepal (Until May 28, 2008).
- Countries with Constitutional Monarchy: United Kingdom, Spain, Thailand, Japan, Belgium.
Ex: U.S., Australia, United Kingdom
Direct Democracy- where people make decisions as a whole instead of voting for someone to make them for them.
Ex: Switzerland, Ancient Athens, Colonial America
Communism- theory- getting rid of all private property and treating everyone equally.
Actual practice is more like a dictatorship
2. Students will understand the differences between the major political parties in the United States.
Republicans view-abortion- Against it strongly; promote adoption and abstinence
Democrat view- believe that women should have the choice
Republican-flag burning- oppose, think it's a sin and is against civil religion
Democrat- think that it is free speech
Republican-gun control- open more public land to hunting, will protect right to bear arms, no guns lawsuits, no gun licensing
Democrat- want stronger gun control laws
Republican-environmental laws- encourage market-based solutions to environmental problems
Democrats- want better laws to protect the environment
Republican -affirmative action laws- many oppose; think that they are not as important as they used to be
Democrats- favor; think that we still need them
Republicans-immigration- reform and toughen immigration system to needed skills, only legal immigrants, are going to
tightly control borders
Democrats- think that
Republican-minimum wage- shouldn't be increased; hurts businesses
Democrats- favor; think that it should be increased to help workers
Republican-health care- against; think it will be too difficult
Democrats- favor; think that we need universal health care
Republican-taxes- cut taxes to help families, tax cuts and low interesting rates for easier home-ownership, tax break to
care for elderly; oppose
Republican-military spending- strongly favor; provide better pay, more training, and better treatment.
Republican-death penalty- strongly favor; think it's an effective thing
Republican-gay marriage- are strongly against it, think it's against the traditional military, think it's better when a man marries a woman
Republican-prayer in school- are for teacher-led prayer, go against activist judges who are trying to ban the pledge and the ten commandments
3. Students will understand the causes and effects of global warming.
causes- over population is big because we use many more harmful pollutants with more people, mountain building, volcanic emotions, continental drift, cars melt down ozone layers
effects- rising sea level, sea surface temps are getting higher, more co2 in atmosphere
areas most effected- bangladesh, sudan, caribbean, australia, alps, britain, siberia, tuvalu, great barrier reef
4. Students will understand the causes and effects of overpopulation.
it's a condition where the number of organisms in an area or habitat exceeds its carryin capacity
causes- increase in births, decrease in deaths because of medicines
the average number of children a woman has is 7 or 8, this occurs in mostly third world countries
overpopulated countries- china, US, haiti, pakistan, ethiopia, madagascar, malawi, sudan, uganda, zimbabwe, united kingdom, nigeria
over population is not just about how many people there are but by how much impact on the environment each person has on that country
global effects- animals are becoming extinct, more cars= more pollution, increased deforestation, human communities are too dense and produce wastes, over half of the earth's wetlands are gone
more effects- higher percentage of poverty, high birth rate, low life expectancy, social problems, poor diet, high crime rate, poor diet and living conditions
prevention- abstinence and birth control, limit immigration, limit number of children that a family can have
world- 6.7 billion
US- 300 million
Iowa- 3 million
harlan- 5500
5. Students will understand the impact of globalization.
Globalization is basically the world "shrinking"
1492-1800s: shrunk the world large to medium, went global through your country
1800s- 2000s: shrunk medium to small, went global through your companies
2000- present: shrinking from small to tiny, flattening the world, built around individuals and small groups globalizing, built around groups that are every color of the world not only white men
6. Students will be able to locate major countries of the world.
7. Students will be able to explain their understanding of recent
current events(Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Darfur, Rwanda, Somalia).
Iraq- Iraq went to war with Kuwait in the 1990s because they believed the Kuwait was taking their oil. We went over and helped so that Kuwait could be freed from Iraq power.
We went to war with Iraq in 2003 because Saddam Hussein was a great supporter of terrorism and we found out that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. The United Nations had a lot of control in this war. The Bush administrative had a lot of big moments in this war like: invasion 2003, setting up Iraq government, Saddam Hussein being captured and executed, the surge
the Middle-East. In April 2003 we got into the war in Iraq. Democrats said we lost our focus and should have stayed focused on
Afghanistan. Barak Obama plans on sending
more troops over to Afghanistan. The Surge was what made the war in
Iraq better for us because we weren't doing very good at first. People
were debating on whether or not we should send a Surge to Afghanistan.
Barak Obama hopes we have our troops out of there within 18 months. A group called, Taliban, was the government and now is more like a
terrorist organization. They took over the capital, they are very
strict Islamic people, girls couldn't go to school and had to wear
burqas. Women are treated very unfairly there. Al-Qaeda is a world-wide islamic terrorist group that launched an a attack on the World Trade Center because they hate us and don't believe
in our culture and think we are going to ruin them. Our troops can't
leave Afghanistan because other surrounding countries don't have strong
enough governments over there. A-Qaeda's goal is to eliminate us from
the Middle-East. We went after them on October 7, 2001 to attack on
Osama bin Laden and eliminate the Taliban. We were able to get the
Taliban out of power in about a month. The attack on Afghanistan was
successful in many ways. After the attack of 9/11 Bush tried to keep everyone calm and
launch more attacks on Afghanistan. After Bush's policies the world
began to look down upon us and Bush was viewed as one of the worst
presidents.
Iran- Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president of Iran, believes that the holocaust never happened, the US set up and planned the 9/11 events, and wants to take Israel off the face of the earth.
Iran's nuclear program- we supported them at first, looking for uranium mines, we wanted to help at first and then we started to go against it
because they have their system perfected. we want weapon inspectors to
enter there, Iran could be a bigger threat to us than Iraq. nuclear
power program could happen.
Iran is helping Iraq in the war against us.
Darfur- borders eastern chad
most are African
land is becoming really dry
group of Arabs tried to get black Africans off Darfur to get water and fertile farmland (janjaweed)
rebel groups
Sudan liberation movement and justice and equality movement gained weapons
accuse them of being racist toward the black Africans
janjaweed:
try to take over good farmland by killing Africans and making them leave the country and flee to chad
major people involved:
Sudan leader, omar hasan al-bashir
effects:
500,000 deaths
2.5 million to chad
100 die everyday 5000 every month because of starvation
government neglect caused poverty
us had declared conflict a genocide
donated over 300 million dollars
united nations pledged 22 million dollars for missionary workers, supplies, military
a lot of countries are ignoring it
al-bashir is not letting any other countries go into the country to help
celebrities are trying to get more publicity over to darfur
