1. Students will understand the impact the Industrial Revolution had on the United States.The industrial revolution was when machines started to take over factories and people were much less needed to work. it had both positive effects and negative. Positive: products were produced much faster, and it changed how things were manufactured forever. Negative: many people lost their jobs so many people went into poverty and went hungry.2. Students will understand the impact immigration and urbanization had on the United States.Immigration started because people from other countries, including several from Europe, some from Asia, and also some from Central America, came to the US. Some came because of disease, lack of jobs, or homes, and war in their countries. Others came because they heard America had streets "paved with gold" and to find new jobs or homes or just for a fresh new start. The US started overflowing, and many people lost jobs to the immigrants because they agreed to work for less money. Housing became scarce and many new diseases were brought over to the USUrbanization began in the late 19th century. The cities began overflowing and housing was scarce. Some problems were: shortage of housing, transportation difficulties, tainted water supplies, poor sanitation, increased crime rate, and fire hazards. Safe drinking water became rare. Streets were unsafe and polluted. With all the sanitation problems, many diseases peeked and many peopel died. Thoe who did not have jobs were forced to live in the dirty streets and went hungry.3. Students will understand the impact of the Progressive Era on the United States.Progressives did many things to change the way people lived in the US. They made the workplace safer. They reduced child labor. The brought about prohibition which is the banning of something such as alcohol. They helped reduce the number of hours workers had to serve. They made the US more democratic. They brought about women's sufferage which was the women's right to vote. They helped make food and drugs safer. They helped conserve land and resources. They helped regulate businesses. They supported socialism--government runs business. They supoorted muckrakers, who would now be called investigative journailsts.4. Students will understand the impact imperialism had on the United States and world.Imperialism is to rule over a people or place through colonization, military power, economic or political power.the ideal of democracy has been spread to the countries of Panama and the Philippines, and other cultures continue to be influenced by American politics, economy, and culture.5. Students will understand the causes for US involvement in World War I and the effects it had on the United States.The assassination of Archdue Franz Ferdinand, The Sinking of the Lusitania. The country went into the Great depression after the war. Many died in battle.The US would never be the same again.6. Students will understand the political, social and economic changes that occurred in the 1920’s in the United States.Some women embraced new social changes and fashion and attitude changes of the 20s. These same women were more assertive, drank and smoked more, and usually weren't in tied down relationships. THese women were called flappers. The double standard came about. The double standard was a set of principals that were different for men and women.Families changed. Birthrate went down since the war because of birthcontrol pills, high schoolers became more social, new technologies were introduced which made house wives less needed, Auotomobiles came out. The radio was invented which brought a change to the nation. News was broadcasted on the radio, same as soprts shows, and entertainment programs. The number of high schoolers increased because the government was pushing more people to join. Literacy rates rose. More subjects were offered. Teachers were more determined because they had to teach students of different nationalities as well. Taxes rose. Small businesses could not compete with larger ones so they lost business. Charles Linburg was the first person to fly nonstop across the Atlantic.7. Students will understand the causes and effects of the Great Depression.The Great Depression started in October 29, 1929 with the crash of the stock market and lasted until 1939 when World War 2 broke out. Some negative effects: There was a sharp reduction in profits and personal incomes, as well as world trade when people tried to protect their income by raising tariffs and imports. Governments reduced spending which decreased consumer demand. Contruction stopped. Some nations changed rulers and types of governments. In Germany, it eventually led to the rise of Adolf Hitler. In US and Britain, the Government intervened resulting in welfare systems. Investors lost large sums of money. Many stores, businesses, factories, etc were closed leaving many people jobless, homeless, and penniless. Without money, many lived on the streets. Some parents gave up their children to those who could actually take care of their children. Many people died from hunger an illness, while others comitted suicide from the harshness of living conditions. Some postive effects: Children who grew up during the depression became inventive and imaginative. People began to respect what they had and not take advantage of it. People began to work hard for what they wanted.
