1. Students will understand the impact the Industrial Revolution had on the United States. The impact that the industrial revolution had on the United States was that many things were being invented at that time and technology became very popular. For instance electricity was a BIG thing and that eventually led to things like the light bulb which also made a lot of impact on Americans. All this allowed monopolies to occur. Monopolies were when a company would have almost all control or complete control of an industry. They would do this and it would make all the other businesses to go out of business as well. The Sherman Antitrust Act broke this up. Another things that occurred in the time was the labor unions in which people weren't happy with there salaries, the conditions, hours, or things like that. Another big thing was women's rights.2. Students will understand the impact immigration and urbanization had on the United States.Land shortages, famine, religious reasons, and land shortages all brought immigrants over from places like Europe, Italy, Austria-Hungary, France, China, and Russia. People had to go through Ellis island or Angel Island. Most of the Chinese went through Angel Island. They would have to have a certain amount of money to get in and they had to know some other things. Immigrants would help build railroads and tough jobs like that. Many Americans got very angry with immigrants because the immigrants would except lower pay than the Americans, therefore Americans would be losing there job to immigrants.Immigrants then started moving to cities because that's where all of the factories were that would hire them to work for close to nothing. This made cities much bigger. Farmers were beginning to become broke and so they also moved to the cities hoping to receive a more steady income working in factories also. Because of so many people moving to the city the cities became overpopulated and that then caused things fires because homes were built so close together. And there were limited policemen at this time. These places were very unsanitary and disgusting. Rats would eat peoples close and people would just throw their trash out into the streets.3. Students will understand the impact of the Progressive Era on the United States. The Progressive Era was from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. This Era was mainly about helping the common people and fixing problems. Protecting social welfare, promoting moral improvement, creating economic reform, and fostering efficiency were the four main goal of the Progressive Era. The affects it had on the women were that it allowed women to vote and they then started to work outside of there homes, because before they weren't really allowed to in factories or have any big jobs like the men. They were basically just for working in the homes. This affected workers by making working places a lot safer and establishing only an 8 hour work day. Workers Compensation also came about in this time. It said that if you were to get hurt while on the job then the company would compensate you for that. Back then the meat was really bad and some even contained rat poop. They didn't put any labels on their meat so no one knew when the meat was processed or when it went bad. The Progressives made it so the companies would be inspected and if they didn't pass the inspections then the company could be shut down of taken out of business. The Progressive Ear affected children by lowering the times they could work and making the ages higher and more fit for children. The reason children were hired in the first place was because their little hands could easily fix small parts and could fix into little places where adults could not.4. Students will understand the impact imperialism had on the United States and world.Imperialism is when countries take over smaller countries. This made other countries afraid of us. We got Alaska and Hawaii from this.5. Students will understand the causes for US involvement in World War I and the effects it had on the United States. The Zimmerman Note was a note to Mexico basically asked them to help take over us. They wanted to do this so Mexico could get the land back that we took from them. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was a big for World War I. The way that the war affected was that women now worked in all the factories that the men had worked in before they were fighting in the war. Women also began working on the farm because the men weren't there and they had to provide for their children. The American Cross started as a result from WWI.6. Students will understand the political, social and economic changes that occurred in the 1920’s in the United States.Political- After the War was over tariffs were raised significantly. The Tea Pot Dome Scandal. NAACP fought for African American rights. Fought for anti-lynching which is hanging people. 1928 lynching was developed and failed after only a few years. The Ku Klux Klan was a group that didn't like African Americans at all. Nativism was were immigrants were wanted to be kept out of our country. They destroyed anything that involved African Americans. Immigration was trying to be reduced in the 1920's. It was cut down significantly. They tried this because of the red scare. We were scared that we were going to become communists. We feared communist and we had to very strict with these people and possibly even kill them. This was the reason for nativism and immigration acts. Isolationism was another political change. We thought we were forced into the war and we didn't want that to happen again. The Kellog Briand Pact was a pact to stay out of war and that didn't last very long. The Dawn's plan said that we were going to loan money to Germany to pay back Great Britain and France so they would pay us back. We lost money from it.Economic- Raising tariffs made less competition. It made it impossible for country's to pay us back. For this we lost a lot of money. Britain and France turned to Germany for help but that didn't work out. France came over to help us with loans and that caused the Dawn's Plan.Social Changes- The automobile was like the back bone of the Americans economy. It created a lot of jobs for people. It Gave a lot of independence to families. A urban sprawl since people had cars they could move out to the country and drive to work. At this time one in five people had a car. People met new people from other areas. It made it so that people could date and go places. Airplanes began as mail carriers. In 1927 The Lock Heed Company created the first one engine airplane. This made it so people could go back and visit families. This opened up huge opportunities for people. After the war women began to change. They started to demand more rights. Because before the war they just got the right to vote. Zedla Fitzgerald was married to a writer. She was like the first American flapper. People thought that if you were going to date then you are going to get married. During war women worked in all the factories when the men were at war. When they got back from the war men took over the factories and women went back to working at home. Women were never given big jobs and their wages were a lot less then men. 1900-1930 is when all this went on. The birth rate dropped after the war. In 1916 the first birth control came out. This led to a lot more casual relationships. Children became to get sent off to school. Teens were becoming a lot more rebellious. This started the downward spiral of our country. People hated Hoover. He told people that poverty would be banished from the nation. He also told people that there would be no poor people. Six months later we went into the Great Depression. He was popular until. He will go down as one of the worst presidents in our history.7. Students will understand the causes and effects of the Great Depression. Some of the causes of the Great Depression were that people were losing their jobs, banks were closing, people started to move west, farmers were going out of business, credit, over making of goods schools were built quickly and business went into debt. Some of the effects of the Great Depression were that the rich got richer and the poor got poorer. People started to buy on credit and they cut back on spending. The number of people building houses went down. People lost their jobs. The stock market crashed.
