1. Students will understand the impact the Industrial Revolution had on the United States.What allowed the Industrial Revolution to take off?1. United States had a lot of natural resources.2. Government supported businesses didn't monitor businesses so they could grow.3. Growing urban population provided cheap labor and markets for new products.The Industrial Revolution was the period of time in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. The Bessemer process made it so that steel could be produced very efficiently so the railroad companies were able to expand rapidly to distribute goods. This made it so that the people, who at the time where mostly self-sufficient, was able to buy cheaper goods. There was a lot of machinery built during this time with this steel to make everyday work quicker and so there was less need for extra hands on the farms. This led many people to more to rapidly growing cities to find work. However this did allow some people like John Rockefeller to create monopolies on certain industries.The inventions of the light bulb, typewriter, and the telephone changed the way that people went about their lives. They allowed people to work in earlier and later in the day, reproduce documents, and talk to people that would normally take days to travel to.2. Students will understand the impact immigration and urbanization had on the United States.UrbanizationPeople moved to the cities because they were looking for jobs that were promised there and it was supposedly easier in the cities. However because so many people were moving there so quickly there wasn’t enough houses, water, or jobs. This helped to create police and firefighting agencies to help control the crime and fires.ImmigrationPeople were coming to the US to make money or escape from their home country. One of the biggest reasons they came was for the Gold Rush but stayed because they couldn’t make it back home. Most of these people didn’t have money anymore so they would work jobs for less pay then most people would and because of this they were the worker of choice on the railroads. All of the people coming sparked the rise of nativism through racism and caused people to place restrictions on the immigration of some peoples.3. Students will understand the impact of the Progressive Era on the United States.What did the progressives do to make the workplace safer?Worker's safety and Worker's Comp. Before there wasn't anything like this because there was extremely dangerous machines that often killed people. OSHA makes sure that businesses are safe for workers and close them down if they weren't.What did the progressives do to help end or reduce child labor?They pressured politicians into the Keating-Owen Act which prohibited goods that had been made by children from being moved across borders. Restricted hours that children could work. The Progressives banned child labor from occurring.What is prohibition? Why did people want prohibition to come about? What tactics were used to bring about prohibition?Prohibition was the banning of alcohol during the early 1900's. People were heavy drinkers. People wanted to get rid of alcohol because it led to a lot of crime and social problems. Women really wanted this because they had to deal with the drunken husbands. Progressives asked for the 18th amendment which would ban alcohol nationwide.What did progressives do to help workers reduce the number of hours they had to work?Before the progressives people were working 15-16 hours a day seven days a week. Muller v Oregon said that women shouldn't work more then 10 hours a day. Bunting v Oregon established a 10 hour work day for men. This is only for people who are paid by the hour and overtime comes into play today.What did progressives do to make our country more democratic?17th Amendment called for the direct election of US senators. They wanted a secret ballot so people weren't intimidated. Recall- elected official of the state runs the country badly enough that they recall the vote so that someone better could be elected. Initiative and referendum- Allowing people to vote for laws if the government were doing terrible.What is women’s suffrage? What approaches did women use to gain the right to vote?Women's suffrage was basically for women to be able to vote. Before only men were in government and got educations. Seneca Falls was the first time women got together to try and get the right to vote. 19th amendment finally gave women the right to vote in 1920.What did progressives do to bring about better wages for workers?Before people hired a lot of children because they could pay them less and get away with it. Massachusetts was the first state to have a minimum wage law and it slowly works its way up.What is segregation? What did progressives do to help African Americans?It is separation of people by race. Plessy v Ferguson set up segregation. Brown v the Board of Education of Topeka Kansas started to desegregate people. Progressives really didn't help with segregation. Woodrow Wilson promised to help blacks to get their vote and then segregated DC.What did the progressives do to make food and drugs safer for the people of the United States?The Meat Inspection Act made it so meat was inspected so nothing disgusting went into meat. Pure Food and Drug Act required that labels be put on food and drugs so that people knew what they were getting.What did progressives (TR) do to help conserve land and resources in our country?Newlands Act-1902- sold western land and made dams which allowed for irrigation so they could be farmed. He set aside land for conservation.What did progressives do to regulate businesses in the United States?Teddy Roosevelt broke up trusts (monopolies). Elkins Act- no rebates for rich and Hepburn Act- set max rates on railroads. Wilson passed the Clayton Anti-Trust Act. This act broke up monopolies but it also allowed labor union and allowed strikes, boycotts, and picketing.Federal Trade Commission investigates companies for monopoly practices and behavior.What was the progressive’s philosophy on tariffs? Describe the Federal Reserve System.Some tariffs were raised under the Payne-Aldridge act. However most of them were dropped under the Underwood tariff act. The federal reserve system was a bank for banks.Describe the impact aid organizations had on our country.The settlement houses came along to help the poor. YMCA helped the young and other people and soup kitchens help to feed the hungry.What is socialism? How was it started in the United States?Eugene V Debbs was a hardcore socialist and he wanted to have all the people get the same amount of money. Socialism is where the government controls businesses and Debbs kind of started it in the US.What/who were muckrakers and what impact did they have on our country?Muckrakers were investigative journalists who exposed businesses who were trying toform monopolies or anyone who was causing a problem in society.Ida Tarbel wrote a book on the standard oil company. Rockefeller was securing high freight rates on oil and getting rid of competition so oil stayed high.Lincoln Stephens wrote articles on corruption in different cities of the US. He kind of looked at the big picture corruption in the big cities.Upton Sinclair wrote a book on the corruption in sanitary in the meat packing plants.Describe the major social changes that affected women during the Progressive Era.Before women couldn't vote or really anything other than working around the house and taking care of the children. The progressives helped women to get an education and get better jobs. They also worked on getting the right to vote, 19th amendment gave this to them. These women also supported Prohibition. Title 9 Act allowed women to equal access to sports in schools.What did local government do to reform itself during the Progressive Era?Instead of political machines there were many people running the city in the form of city councils or other things.4. Students will understand the impact imperialism had on the United States and world.First of all imperialism is when powers of the world take colonies all over the world. Up until the late 1800’s we had remained isolationalist because we didn’t want to be like Britain. Once the borders reached both oceans however people began to think that we should take new land. We mainly wanted two things military prowess and new trade. Once we started this policy we acquired Hawaii, Alaska, and a part of the Philliphines. It was also one of the main reasons for WW1.5. Students will understand the causes for US involvement in World War I and the effects it had on the United States.1. The US was very upset with both sides in war. We didn't like that Great Britain was taking our goods and the Germans were sinking and killing our ships and crews.2. The Zimmerman Note from Germany declared that they were going to start sinking all ships with U-boats. They wanted us to keep out of the war. It also said that if this didn't work Mexico would fight the US to keep them out of Europe and if they won they would get their lost territory. It was put in papers.3. Jingoism4. Trade with England increased, Germany decreased as years went on. 3 Billion dollars went to England in goods basically saying that we are allied with England economically.5. Propaganda6. Preparedness Program had us prepared for war7. American Businesses pushed the government to go to war so they could make money on weapons and other wartime goods8. German declaration of “unlimited submarine warfare”People became to like the idea of the war and pushed for it. Once we were in the war people grew gardens to provide for themselves so soldiers had food. Businesses changed to make wartime goods like weapons and rations and ammunition.6. Students will understand the political, social and economic changes that occurred in the 1920’s in the United States.Political-Nativism is not wanted immigrants to come in and take jobs and other things.-Isolationism is where we stayed apart from all foreign affairs. We wanted to go back to this.–Communism was where everything was controlled by a dictator. Some people started a communist party and people thought they might win to power called the Red Scare.-Americans thought there wasn’t any use for immigration so they were getting mad at people coming into the country.-The KKK was a group of white men who only liked the white Americans and wanted to keep blacks down in power.-Warren Harding passed an act that outlawed war called the Kellog/Briand act. He had the Dawes plan which loaned 2.5 billion to Germany to help repay France and Britain and then they used it to pay us back.-Teapot Dome scandal was where there was oil rich land set aside for the military but Albert B Fall leased it out to oil companies and pocketed the money.-1920’s were dominated by republicans.-African Americans were moving north from the south and a lot of people didn’t like it. Anti lynch laws were proposed but were never passed.Economic-Fordney McCumber Tariff raised tariff rates to 60% which made it impossible for Britain and France to repay their war debts.-Car industry was booming on account of people earning more money and buying on credit. This allowed people to go on vacations which boosted related businesses.-Coolidge tried to help out the middle class and believed in low taxes and easy credit.-Road construction boomed due to the rapid expansion of the automobile industry. Better roads were demanded by the many people now traveling. Federal Aid Highway Act was passed to create new highways.-Advertising became huge as people hired psychologists to make the products appeal to the public.-People believed that prosperity would never end and they bought on credit so there was huge debt.SocialPeople were buying cars so they went on vacations and this caused gas stations and motels to spring up. People also built garages for their cars. Airplanes started to be used as a competition between airways but then they started to carry people all over. Advertising caused people to buy lots of goods. People sat around to listen to the radios because they got live news, radio boxing became popular. Enrollment in schools rose dramatically. People played a lot of games and music and dancing was very popular.Harlem Renaissance was when the Blacks started theatres and did a lot of the things that white people did although they were highly prejudiced against.7. Students will understand the causes and effects of the Great Depression.CausesUneven distribution of income where the rich got richer and the poor got poorer. People were buying on credit when they didn’t have a lot of money so there was heavy debt. People quit building houses so all the things that go into a new house suffered. Farming goods fell greatly due to surpluses but they just made more. People started to buy less because of lack of money. The stock market crashed, dumping lots of stocks, so a lot of people lost all of their savings due to this. People panicked and withdrew money but a lot of people didn’t and banks failed leaving people without their savings.EffectsBanks closing because people with drawing money. A lot of people lost jobs. People would wrap themselves in newspaper to stay warm Hoover blankets. Also, they would live in sewers and other places because they had nowhere else to stay. Bread lines and soup kitchens were established. People would stand in line and wait for food. People started to move west because farmers lost their farms. Suicide rate went up. Schools began closing.
