My Semester Blog1. Students will understand the main political and economic systems of the world.Democracy is when people have a say in the government. There are two types of Demorcracy, Representive and Direct. Direct Democracy is when we pick it. Representive Democracy is when you vote for someone to speak for you which is what we have.Monarchy is where someone rules over another, there are also two types of Monarchy Costitutional and absolute. Absolute Monarchy is when one person has complete power and Constitutional is the complete oposite. Constitutional Monarchy is when like a queen is a figure and the prime minister has all the power. The Queen has no say in anything.Communism is when the government owns everything. That is kinda scary. If you think about it that would be like the government being about to kick you out of your town pretty much.Anarchy is when there is no government control. It is pretty much crazy what goes on when there is no government control because they can do what ever they what. I would be scared to live in a place with an Anarchy Government.Socialism and capitalism are the ones i always get mixed up on they are the complete oppisites. Socialism is when the government has control of the industries. I remember this one because of the skit the group did. The government takes money from the rich and gives it to the poor. Capitalism is when people own their buisnesses and the government cant change what is going on in it.2. Students will understand the differences between the major political parties in the United States.There are Republicans and Democrats. They each are have a symbol which are a blue donkey(democrats) and a red elephant(republicans). Most of the time republicans are more strict then the democrats. Republicans are prolife and democrats are prochoice on abortion which means republicans are against it and the democrats are okay with it. There are more issues we hit. Republicans usally favor traditional issues and demorcrate favor chanfe in society and dont like government intervention of peoples lifes.3. Students will understand the causes and effects of global warming.Causes of Global Warming are overpopulation, air polution, deforestation, ect. The list goes on. Effects that are caused by Global Warming are things like Greenlands ice melting that cause the ocean levels to rise which will cause flooding in the areas by the beaches. That is really scarey.4. Students will understand the causes and effects of overpopulation.Overpopulation is caused by the raise in birthrate and how we treat our enviroment. People in asia that has more people then the US in a smaller area are better off then us. All the cars that are in the US cause more polution then a small country in Asia.5. Students will understand the impact of globalization.Globalization is the shriking of the world. The way we communicate is changing everything is changing.6. Students will be able to locate major countries of the world.We do these in the semester tests.7. Students will be able to explain their understanding of recent current events(Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Darfur, Rwanda, Somalia).In Rwanda there was an act like genocide that couldnt be called genocide because the government there refused it wasnt. The UN went over as peace keepers who couldnt kill anyone. The UN refused to do anything about it. The Rebal group(tutsis) took back control of the government after they fought against the other group. this event lasted 100 days and like 1000000people were killed maybe more!Somalia is a failed state.. So basically it is and anarchy. That means it is pretty crazy over there right now. Its not so good over there.Darfur- Pretty much what is going on in Darfur its a genocide. there are more people that die from starvation then getting killed. Most people depend on the UN for food and its hard to come up with all that food.400000 people have died so far. The Darfur government doesnt want to have peacekeepers there but the UN sent them any way. That made me think what are they trying to hide?Iran- In iran they have a rich uranium plants. They say that they are using them as energy plants but we think that they are making Nuclear weapons. We are afraid that they might use them to wipe countries off the map.Iraq- The reason why we invade iraq was because we thought they had weapons of mass distruction. When Iraq attempted to take ove Kuwait.We pretty much told them they cant produce or make nuclear weapons.Afghanistan- When 9/11 happened we just couldnt sit here and do nothing. Since Al-Qeada was behind it and they are based in afghanistan we attacked. The government was against women and technology. Women had to wear long dresses and something over there face or they could get in big trouble. The government was Taliban which they are gone now. We are still looking for Bin Laden who is/was in control of them.That is my semester blog and my final blog for 2009 CWI.
