1. Students will understand the impact the Industrial Revolution had on the United States. So during the industrial revolution the inventions of like steel and oil and electricity came around. Steel is made from iron, like you just take the carbon out. To make steel they made the Bessemer Steel process. The steel was better then iron because it wouldn’t rust and it wouldn’t break as easily. Steel made it easier to build bridges and buildings because we could build up instead of wide. The light bulb was made better. Another invention was the typewriter. It helped so people could read better because sometimes you couldn’t read a persons writing. The telephone was also invented. That was awesome because you could talk to someone who was very far away. It made the US “smaller”. Railroads were starting to come around. The first transcontinental railroad was built. This made it easier to transport things throughout the country. Some labor unions started and there were some strikes. They got better working conditions and working hours.2. Students will understand the impact immigration and urbanization had on the United States.Immigrants were starting to come over because of the technology boom. They pretty much came from everywhere. They would come and go to the cities to find jobs. Then cities would become overpopulated. A lot of families would be in one little room and they would live there. They would work for little pay and they would work long hours so a lot of people got mad at them. The houses were not good at all. If you lived in an apartment it was very crowded and unsanitary. Eventually there was a law that was passed that things had to be a certain amount of clean. That didn’t really help because trash was not really picked up at all so it sat in their houses and got really smelly. The transit system was created to help people get to their jobs. There were finally some good water systems that were coming about. Most people didn’t have plumbing at all so this was pretty good. The water was not very sanitary though. It was pretty nasty. Then they invented filters which helped a little. In the 1900’s there was sewer lines that were put in and there was a garbage collector to pick up the trash, so things were getting cleaner and safer.3. Students will understand the impact of the Progressive Era on the United States. The progressive era was a period of time between the 1890’s and 1910ish when change or reform happened and it benefited the common people. Some groups were started in this era. Like the YMCA and the Salvation Army. The YMCA was a place where people could stay if they couldn’t go home. The Salvation Army was like a church to help the poor people. There were also Settlement houses which were places where poor people could stay and they would be taken care of and they would learn responsibility. A lot changed for worker, men, women, children, poor, and banks. The workers got workers compensation which is if they were hurt on the job and couldn’t work then they would get paid while they weren’t working. The men got shorter working hours and same with women. Women were also given the right to vote, but it took a while. They were mad because black people could vote and they couldn’t. The children got child labor laws which said they had to be a certain age to work. The poor people got settlement houses and the banks got the Federal Reserve Bank, which was basically a banker’s bank. The consumer got the food and drug act which said that you had to label the contents of what you were selling. There was the secret ballot which meant that you could vote in private. Prohibition came about and that was the banning of the manufacturing of alcohol. This law didn’t stay for very long. Most people still drank even though it was illegal. There was the Anti-Trust Act which was to break up monopolies. National Parks were starting to come about. There was a graduated income tax which put a tax on things.4. Students will understand the impact imperialism had on the United States and world.Imperialism is like when countries got bigger. They made colonies and they used the natural resources and they made naval bases. We wanted to make our culture grow which kind of wiped out a few smaller cultures. We bought Hawaii and Alaska. Most people thought Alaska was a waste of money because they thought it was just a huge chunk of ice but they didn’t know it had a lot of like oil and natural resources and stuff like that. We got a lot of land from the Spanish-American war. We go Cuba, Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam. We made the Open Door Policy with China, which said that there was free trade between us. This helped China out from being taken over.5. Students will understand the causes for US involvement in World War I and the effects it had on the United States.CausesSo, we went to war because Germany was sinking our ships for no reason and they were killing innocent people. They were supposed to like give a warning but they didn’t. We were financially tied to the war because of Britain. We were shipping more things to Britain because they weren’t sinking our ships. A big reason was because of the Zimmerman Note. It was a note sent form Germany to Mexico saying that Mexico should join Germany’s side and fight against America. It said that they should get New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas back.EffectsOne effect was the Treat of Versailles. It was the treaty that ended the war. It took a lot of land away from Germany and it said that Germany had to pay 33 million dollars to Britain and France. After this war we totally went back to being isolationists. We stayed out of foreign affairs. Germany didn’t like the way the war ended and if I was Germany I wouldn’t like it either.6. Students will understand the political, social and economic changes that occurred in the 1920’s in the United States.*Political ChangesThere was a Teapot Dome Scandal that was land set aside for the US navy. It was a scandal in the 1920’s and it was land that was sold that wasn’t supposed to be. The NAACP was a group that wanted African American rights. They mostly didn’t want lynching. They moved to the north to find better jobs but it didn’t really help. There was an anti-lynching law but it failed after a few years. The KKK was a group that only liked true Americans. They didn’t like anyone that wasn’t them pretty much. Nativists were people who wanted only Americans; they didn’t like immigrants coming to the US. In the 1920’s they wanted to limit the number of immigrants that came into the country. They didn’t want any immigrants from China, Asia, or Japan. They also didn’t want immigrants because of the red scare. They were in fear that we would become a communist country. In the 1920’s we went back to being isolationist. Then we returned to normal. The Kellogg Briand pace was signed by a lot of countries, like 60. It was a pact that tried to settle disputes and keep us out of war. The Kellogg Briand pace was not successful at all. The Dawes Plans was that we started giving Germany loans so they could pay Great Britain and then Great Britain would give that money back to us.*Economic changesThere were tons of strikes in the 1920’s because people were not doing very well. So the car was made and it made it so you could travel farther. It created a lot of jobs because you needed gas, roads, and factories to make the cars. Route 66 came about and it was a highway. The 1920’s was when a lot of people had cars. The economy really boomed because of the car. It brought people closer together, but it also pushed them apart because you could travel farther with a car. The airplane was used to transfer mail. Then it became used for cargo and later it was a passenger airplane. It didn’t hold a lot of people, like two or three. When farmers produce more food with better efficiency the prices go down. So then they made more food. The installment plan was very bad because if you get something and you don’t pay for it then you go bankrupt and then the company that you bought from doesn’t get your money and they go bankrupt and it’s just this big cycle.*Social changesPeople were moving to the city more. The cities couldn’t grow as fast as the people were coming in so they often turned really bad and became slums. There was a lot more drinking in the city. Prohibition led to a lot of illegal making of alcohol. People know as bootleggers were making like underground tunnels to they could drink. Thomas Scope taught evolution and he got arrested because you are not allowed to teach science. The first radio station was KDKA. The main music planed was jazz. People would listen for announcements, sports, and music. They would also listen to shows because they didn’t have TV’s. Men and women would go and watch boxing. The boxers had to get there by train. Newspapers and magazines came out. It was so people could know what was going on. Baseball was very popular and Babe Ruth was very one of the best baseball players. Tennis, swimming, and biking also became popular. Cars let people travel to these places to enjoy these events. Flappers were girls that would keep up in all the fashion. They would smoke and drink in public. They would show their knees and wear loose clothes. The double standard was laws that were more stick on women. In the 1930’s, 1 million women were earning money by being teachers or nurses. They came out with washing machines and irons. There was an increase in the number of students that went to high school. A lot of immigrants were starting to go to school.7. Students will understand the causes and effects of the Great Depression.*CausesMining and lumbering were in great demand. Industries were suffering and they had to lay people off. Housing fell, so not very many houses were being built. Farmers weren’t making money so they would make more food which made prices fall even more which made the farmers take out loans and they couldn’t pay off the loans. They banks would take the land but they weren’t getting money so they would go bankrupt. The government was buying products at regular price but that was voted. Consumers had less money to spend. People were living on credit and then they couldn’t pay it off. Wealthy people were really wealthy and poor people were really poor. The government was investing more and the farmers were going into debt. The stock market fell so the wealthy people weren’t buying much. The tariff act of 1930 was an act that put a high tariff on all imported goods. It huts us because then other countries would put a tariff on us and that made it bad all over the world. People would run to the banks and take out all of their money. The banks would go bankrupt so people wouldn’t get all their money. Hoover made an empty promise. The government practiced La Say Fair and they let monopolies come back and they went back to isolationist. Hoover said that everything was going to be good but it wasn’t. Everyone blamed Hoover for the recession. When the stalk market fell he said to do nothing because he said it was going to pass and he didn’t want to do anything.*EffectsA lot of people lost their jobs. It was about 25% unemployment rates. If people got kicked out of their houses they would go live on the street or in parks. People were moving to “Hoovervilles” which small towns with tiny shacks. They couldn’t find food so they would dig in garbage cans. Then they made soup kitchens where people could get free or low cost food. People moved west because they lost their homes. There were a lot of hobo’s. A lot of men committed suicide. Kids were malnourished. Schools and banks were closing. One thing that Hoover did was the RFC (Reconstruction Finance Corporation) which gave billions of dollars to big businesses and banks and he thought that is would trickle down to the poor because they would get jobs. There were a lot of dams in the 1930’s. The farmers protested. They would burn fields and milk and they would just go and kill like all the animals.
