This is a semester blog. It states everything that we need to know and understand. The semester test will be over these seven questions so it is important to know all of them.Semester Test Questions1. Students will understand the impact the Industrial Revolution had on the United States. (Chapter 6)Transportation was expanding in the industrial revolution.New inventions-The bessemer steel process created by a british manufacturer, Henry Bessemer, became very effective and widely used. This process of injecting air into molten iron helped produce more then 90% of the nations steel.-The typewriter was invented. It changed the world of work and created jobs for women. Which also made an impact on factory work.-The light bulb was perfected by Thomas Edison. It helped change the nature of business. Later, electicity was made safer an less epensive.-The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. The telephone helped extend the worldwide communications network.-Railroads grew. They caused standard time zones to be set. Railroads influenced the growth of towns and communities as well.-Business Stratigies- The search to make better products more cheaply continued. Carnegie wanted to control the steel industry. Which he then accomplished by vertical integration. A process of buying out other suppliers in order to control the raw materials and transportation systems. He then attempted to buy out other steel producers, this is called horizontal integration when companies producing similar products merge.2. Students will understand the impact immigration and urbanization had on the United States. (Chapter 7/8)-Native-born Americans thought of their country as a melting pot. A mixture of people of different cultures an races who blended together by abandoning their native langauges and customs. Although new immigrants didnt want to leave behind their culture identities.-Urbanization is the growth of cities mostly in the northeast an midwest. The americanization movement was sponsored by the government and many concerned citizens. It was designed to assimilate people of wide-ranging cultures into a dominate culture. Many didnt want to abandon their cultures and traditions so ethnic communities were created to provide social support for immigration of the same countries. There they could speak their own language, and practice customs and religion.-As the urban population went up, cities started to face more and more problems. These included housing, transportation, water, sanitation, crime, and fire.3. Students will understand the impact of the Progressive Era had on the United States. (Chapter 9)There were four goals of the progressive era. It changed the lives of the common people. Women got the right to vote. They got better education and eventually got jobs outside of the home. They pushed for prohibition as well. Child labor laws were set because businesses were taking advantage of children. They were paying them low wages and they sometimes did things that adults couldnt do. Working hours were finally shortened and there were better wages. Afican Americans didnt get helped during the progressive era. In fact, blacks and whites were separated. Teddy Roosevelt became president and is well known as the trust buster. He didnt let businesses lower prices to drive out other competing businesses. Also, railroads set a reasonable price.4. Students will understand the impact imperialism had on the United States and the world. (Chapter 10)Imperialism is when stronger nations take control over weaker territories or countries. Many countries began to colonize to get things such as land, money, power, trade, and natural resources. The US bought Alaska for $7.2 million. Then, the US got Hawaii because the sugar plantations were very important. The Spanish-american war was between Spain and Cuba with the help of the Americans. The war was caused by yellow journalism, the sinking of the USS Maine, and several others. Because of the war, the US obtained Guam, Philippines, and Puerto Rico.5. Students will understand the causes for US involvement in World War I and the effects is had on the United States. (Chapter 11)CAUSESAt the beginning, the US was neutral. They got involved in WWI because there were sinking ships with Americans on board. Great Britain and Germany stopped US shippings. Wilson wanted peace, but then British started sinking all ships in the waters. Trade with England had increased and trade with Germany had decreased.EFFECTSNew countries emerged. Germany had to take full responsibility for WWI. The league of nations was established to prevent wars in the future.6. Students will understand the political, social and economic changes that occured in the 1920's in the United States. (Chapter 12 and 13)Political changesNativism is not wanting immigrantsIsolationism is no foreign affairsKKK- white men who didn't like African AmericansThe Quota System limited the number of foreigners that could enter the U.S.Strikes were people that stopped working to get what they wanted.Communism is when everything is controlled by dictatorlimiting immigration- stopped immigration.. thought they would be communistSocial ChangesProhibition led to more crimes. People would go to certain places to drink and gamble called Speakeasies. Sometimes people would even make their own alcohol, this is called bootleggers. Cars changed peoples lives. They had more freedom and could go other places. People enjoyed going to drive in movies. Airplanes were first used to deliver mail but later were used as transportation. Kids started to go to high school. Radios were used to listen to sporting events.Economic ChangesThe tax rate on imorted goods increased. people couldnt pay for things as easily as the used to. Roads and gas stations were built and automobiles were becoming more and more popular. They allowed families to go places together. Taxes that supported education also increases because more kids went to school and the schools needed money. A lot of people needed educated.7. Students will understand the causes and effects of the Great Depression. Blamed for not doing anything. comes into office march 1929. He says that everyone will have two cars in every gurage, a chicken in every pot, and poverty will be banished from the nation. Everyone will be well off. Things will get better. He came across as not caring, he didnt change anything or try to help anyone. In fact, things got worse. A year later, depression was at its worst. He said be patient and everything will be fine.He is most know for the reconstrictive finance corporation. The RFC gave money to the state and local governments who could give the money to people and businesses. He gave money to the states.Bonus Army- WWI verterains marched into Washington DC demanding money early. They wanted their BONUS money early. Congress didnt give them the money early.
