Semester 2 Test Blog

1. Students will understand the impact the Great Depression and New Deal had on the US.

The Great Depression lost many people their jobs and sent them into poverty. They could not afford food and were forced into welfare often times. There was no room for wants, only necessities. The New Deal formed wekfare and social security systems for American citizens. There were some organizations that offered many people jobs in order to help pay for their families. The Federal Housing Administration offered housing units to homeless people who needed a place to stay.

2. Students will understand the causes, effects and major events of WWII.
-Pearl Harbor

Several Japanese planes bombed Pearl Harbor sending the country into WWII.
-D-Day

June 6th, 1994 the US stormed Normandy Beach. Consisted of 2 assaults, an air assault and an amphibious landing.
-Atomic bombing

after Pearl Harbor, the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima. and Nagasaki. Little Boy and Fat Man were dropped on the cities. The bombs caused radiation and many people to die or become sick from the fumes.

3. Students will understand how/why the Allies won WWII.

Techonology, resources, and Air War. Naval Warfare was advanced by techonolgy and radar.

4. Students will understand the causes, effects and major events of the Cold War.

Result of tension between communist and capitalist societies. The North Atlantic Treaty was signed as a result. The treaty stated that an attack on one country was an attack on them all. The Sovit Union launched Sputnick 1 causing the space race during the time. The Berlin Wall was built and started more tension.

Policy of Containment- using military, economic, and diplomatic strategies to temper the spread of Communism

domino effect- one country became communist, then all the others would follow in a domino effect.

mutual deterrence- A stable situation in which two or more countries or coalitions of countries are inhibited from attacking each other because the casualties and/or damage resulting from certain retaliation would be unacceptable.

massive retaliation- military doctrine and nuclear strategy in which a state commits itself to retaliate in much greater force in the event of an attack.

Truman Doctine- President Truman's policy of providing economic and military aid to any country threatened by communism or totalitarian ideology

Marshall Plan- a United States program of economic aid for the reconstruction of Europe

NATO-North Atlantic Treaty Organization: an international organization created in 1949 by the North Atlantic Treaty for purposes of collective security
The Red Scare- people feared communism would rise and take over.

McCarthyism- McCarthy trialed many people he accused of being communists.

HUAC, Fidel Castro and the Bay of Pigs, Nuclear Arms Race and Reductions were other events.

5. Students will understand the causes, effects and major events of the Korean Conflict.

Truman believed the Domino affect and China just became Communist. They wanted to appease Korea. Later The South invaded the North. 10 million people died during the war.

6. Students will understand the causes, effects and major events of the Vietnam Conflict.

The same thing that happended to Korea happended to Vietnam. Its roots went back to the end of WWII. The domino effect was a mjor scare that brought this conflict about.


7. Students will understand the causes and effects of the Persian Gulf Wars as well as the War on Terror.

The Persian Gulf War was started because of Sadam Hussein stealing oil. The War on Terror was strated because of the 9-11 attacks by the Al Quada from Afghanistan.
