Valkyrie is a World War 2 drama following Colonel Stauffenberg (played by Tom Cruise) and his plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Stauffenberg is a German soldier that was wounded on the battlefield leaving him with severe burns, an amputated hand, one eye, and a deformed hand. Before being injured in battle, he was already trying to find a way to overthrow Adolf Hitler but because that anyone else with the same thoughts were to scared to confront Hitler himself, he had to find another way.
After being injured and getting out of the military hospital, he was approached by a group containing other politicians, and German soldiers who were looking to overthrow Adolf Hitler. While they are busy searching for a plan to eliminate Hitler, Stauffenberg finds an old operation that would allow them to take over Berlin, Germany in only a mere 6 hours. By taking over Berlin, they would be able to take the surrounding Nazi controlled regions of Germany. While the plan is dangerous and punishable by execution, they plan to go through with it.
First on their agenda was to edit the Valkyrie plan so that it would fit their needs. They were able to take the original Valkyrie plan that would take 6 hours to accomplish, and turn it into a plan that would only take 3 hours and would be just as effective, if not more. The second thing that they had to take care of was the way they would assassinate Hitler. They decided that to kill him, they needed to get in close, plant a bomb, and get out of there before the bomb detonated.
After planting the bomb close to Hitler in a room where he is having a meeting, Stauffenberg exits the building for a get away. The way he planted the explosive, was so it was just close enough to kill Hitler...however, someone knocked over the briefcase and re-positioned it about a foot in the opposite direction that it was originally positioned in. Once the bomb went off, Hitler was injured with just a few bruises and cuts but was not killed. Many people did not know this, so when operation Valkyrie commenced the was a large flaw in the plan.
Just before the final stages of Valkyrie could take place, Hitler was able to regain control of Berlin and the Nazi soldiers soon found all of the traitors except the one that nobody had found out about the plan, and he was actually the one to turn them in however he was not discovered until the end of the war. The soldiers that were behind the plan were soon executed and the plan went out unsuccessful. This was the last of many attempts to kill Hitler, who committed suicide in 1945 after he realized he could not win the war.
I gave this movie a 4 out of 5 stars because it was very well put together, and acted out very well. Not to mention that I love almost anything that has to do with World War Two. Some parts however were somewhat boring, or drug out with little happening. I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys World War Two or drama.
