Saving Private Ryan begins on the beaches of Norway on D-day. Two brothers are killed in action while fighting on the shore. With one son already deceased, a mother is sent all 3 telegrams of their deaths at once. Because of this tragedy, Chief of Staff George C. Marshall sends 8 men on a mission to find the last living son and bring him home safely. Tom Hanks acting as Captain Miller sets out on his mission with 7 others to save Pvt. Ryan. Along the way he encounters many other Ally troops, along with enemies. Amongst the rubble of a town, one of Miller’s men gets shot by a sniper while helping a civilian child. Another main encounter with ally troops is when they stumble upon a wrecked plane turned into a camp. There, they look through all of the dog tags to see if Ryan’s is among them. Another encounter, but with Axis troops is when they scope a machine gun post. They split up and surround the post and take out the battery, but at the cost of another one of his men. They find Private Ryan guarding a bridge. He insists on staying and protecting the bridge from any Axis troops. They know of incoming troops and set up an ambush to stop them from getting to the bridge. They use ‘sticky bombs’ to de-rail the tanks’ tracks and slowly kill off all of the enemy troops at the cost of many allied troops lives as well. In the end, the bridge is saved, but Captain Miller dies. Private Ryan lives and goes home to his mother a hero.
I really liked the movie. I felt like I knew all of the characters pretty well because they were well developed. I liked the action as well as the slower parts. It was well distributed, the ratio of action parts to slow parts was well balanced I think. The final setting was amazing, and I loved the final battle scene. It was based off of a true story which is always good. Cinematography is pretty well done. Tom Hanks was the main actor, and he did a really good job as usual. The story was well put together. I just think it is an overall amazing movie.
