Me, Kyle, and Mumm got together Saturday night at my place and searched Netflix for a WWII movie that neither of us had seen before, which was hard because I love war movies and have watched almost every WWII movie outthere. Finally we found one that looked good, “Saints and Soldiers”.
This movie starts off on the Ardennes Front during the Battle of the Bulge. Some men from Battalion B are captured by the Germans and lined up in rows in a field. One soldier gets a little to nervous and tries to run for it, the Nazi’sopen fire and mow down almost all of the men in the battalion. Fortunately fourof them escape, Corporal Deacon from Arizona,Medic Gould from Brooklyn, Private Kendrick from Louisiana, and Sgt. Gunderson. The men wereable to capture one rifle containing four rounds during their escape.
Deacon, an expert marksman, is carrying the gun. When they find a place to bunker down for the night, Deacon takes first watch. He starts to see hallucinations of women and children and kind of freaks out. Gundersonlater explains to the other men that Deacon had mistakenly killed two women andsix children when trying to take out an unseen enemy.
The next day after spending the night under the floor boards of a shack, because better equipped German troops chose the same shack to hunker down in, the four men set out again trying to get back to friendlylines. The men come across a British paratrooper, Flight Sgt. Winley, stuck ina tree and cut him loose. After they get acquainted the Brit tells them he hascritical intelligence that he needs to get to the allies ASAP.
Over the next few days the men start to grow closer together. They come in contact with some Germans and Gunderson is killed. Then Kendrick is killed saving Winleys life. The three remaining men then hijack a jeep anddisguised in Nazi uniforms make their way through a German camp. The Germansdiscover they’re fakes and start shooting at them. They race to the allied campbut the allies start shooting at them also because of they’re uniforms. Finallythe Allies realize they’re friendly and help them to safety. The intelligence isgiven to commanders and the movie pretty much ends there.
I think it was an incredible movie. The hardships those guys went through are just amazing, and they were everyday guys just like Mr. Bruns. I also have a special relation to this story because my great grandfather wason the Ardennes Front and fought in the Battleof the Bulge. He never talked about it. I think he experienced some bad thingsthere.
