Saddam Hussein

Saddam Hussein was born in Al-Awja, Iraq on April 29, 1937. His name, Saddam, means “one who confronts. Saddam had a troubled childhood. His father disappeared before he was born, and his brother died of cancer shortly after Saddam was born. As an infant, Saddam was sent away to go live with his uncle and he stayed there until he was three. His mom remarried, and when Saddam came back to live with her, his stepdad was not very nice to him. When Saddam was ten years old he left his family and went back to go live with his uncle.Saddam went to high school and after he finished secondary school he went to study law. He dropped out of law school at the age of 20 to join the pan-Arab Ba’ath Party. He made money during this time by being a part-time teacher. A year after Saddam joined the Ba’ath Party, they tried to assassinate the prime minister of Iraq, ‘Abd al-Karm Qsim, and failed.The Ba’ath Party overthrew the prime minister and leaders of the party were now in charge. Abdul Salam Arif became the president, but later in the year he started arresting Ba’athist leaders. Together, Saddam and Ahmad Hassan al-Bakr overthrew Arif making Ahmad the president and Saddam his deputy.…Later YearsOn March 17, 2003, President George Bush said that if Saddam didn’t step down from his office and leave the country within 48 hours that we would declare war. Saddam refused so the US launched an attack on Iraq. When US soldiers took over Baghdad, Saddam went into hiding. He was found on December 13 and went to trial. He was charged with willful killing, illegal imprisonment, deportation, and torture. He was sentence to death by hanging. On December 30, 2006 he was executed.
