Rwanda-1994

Rwanda was a mass killing of people in 1994. About 800,000 people were killed. Most of the dead were Tutsis and the Hutus did the killing. In about 100 days, hundreds of thousands of Rwandans were killed. The main reason these killings took place, was because of the assassination of Habyarimana. His plane was shot down above the Kigali Airport on April 6, 1994. That was not the only reason that the genocide took place.Ethnic tension has always been a problem between the Hutus and Tutsis. The two groups have many similarities. They speak the same language and have the same traditions. The Tutsis are often more tall and thin than Hutus. Back in the day, Tutsis were considered better than the Hutus. They got better jobs and education offers. This angered the Hutus and they began to start riots. 20,000 Tutsis were killed and some of them fled to other countries. Hutu then took their place.Tutsi refugees that were thrown out of their country, wanted their land back. They started the Rwandan Patriotic Front led by Kagame. They planned to kill Habyarimana and overtake the country. In 1993, Habyarimana signed a peace contract with the RPF. But this did not stop the RPF.After killing people at the airport, the killing of Tutsis and moderate Hutus started. In a couple of hours, recruits were positioned around the country and began killing people. The presidential group got a militia together that had 30,000 people in it. Some citizens were encouraged to join the fight. If they did so, they were offered food and even the land of the ones they killed. In July, the RPF captured Kigali and their government collapsed. When it was obvious that the RPF had won, Hutus fled to Zaire. A Hutu, Bizimungu, was named president and Kagame was his deputy. Then they fell and Bizimungu was put in prison while Kagame became the new president. Over five million deaths were caused because of Hutu militias in DR Congo. A Tutsi government now leads Rwanda. It has twice invaded its neighbor and wants to wipe out all Hutu forces. A group of Congolese Tutsi Rebels stays aware and won’t lay down their weapons so that another genocide won’t take place. In conclusion, not even the world’s largest peacekeeping treaty can end the fight.
