The Rwanda Genocide was a genocide of about 800,000 people of the Tutsis and moderate Hutus. The massacre happened in less than 100 days. The war started on April 6, 1994. The main reason was because of the assassination of Juvenal Habyarimana. Habyarimana was a Hutu. The main perpetrators were Hutus.
The tension between Tutsis and moderate Hutus is nothing new, but the tension has grown plenty. In 1916 belgian colomists decided to give everyone cards to show people's ethnicity. The tutsis did not mind. The tutsis were the more dominant religon. They were taller and skinnier. They continuously get better jobs and better education then the Hutus. The hutus began to riot, killing about 20,000 tutsis. The tutsis became the scapegoat for every crisis in Rwanda.The Rwandan Patriotic Front or (RPF), was started by the Tutsis and some moderate Hutus. They were basically tired of being bulled. There plan was to overthrow Habyarimana.They just wanted their homeland back. Habyarimana was losing popularity and he gained his popularity back by letting the public know about RPF. The hutus then began to get their guard up. Whoever killed Habyarimana is still unknown but was the breaking point of this.Within hours of the shooting.... military, police, and politicians were organizing the massacre. Soon many other joined the organizing. There was a major radio propaganda. The group reached over 30,000 members. The hutus began killing tutsis neighbors. They were bribed by being given land of where they killed Tutsis. When they threw tutsis in the river heading to ethiopia. They claimed to be taking them back to where they belonged.Finally the RPF caught Kigali and ceasedfire. When hutus realized that RPF was winning the battle many Hutus fled to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Even though, the war was over in Rwanda a war erupted between the DRC and all the Hutus that fled there. There was much conflict and led to about 5 million deaths.The hutus just are up to know good. To me, they are just full of jealousy. But they are the only ones that have the guts to actually follow through will of their hate. The pictures are veeeeeeeeeeery gruesome. This genocide was so fast-paced its unbelievable. I can't believe no outside forces helped the Tutsis. It's just sad that this had to happen.
