The Rwanda Genocide all started with the death of Juvénal Habyarimana, the president who was a Hutus. He was assasinated and the Hutus all blamed their next president who happened to be a Tutsi. They groups had always disagreed, but never this badly. They had been the people who worked the land while the Tutsi owned it, and when the Europeans came they favored the Tutsi. The Hutus couldn't stand it so the overthrew the Tutsi and they fled to surrounding countries. The Hutus then trained up an army and waited for the Tutis to come back. Then came the killing. They were told that wipe out the Tutis for taking advantage of them and killing their president. So they started with the Hutus who weren't anti-Tutsi. They then went on to the Tutis themselves.
Inbetween 500,000 and 1,000,000 people were killed in the Rwanda Genocide. The killing was done by mostly two political parties, the Interahamwe and the Impuzamugambi. They had approximatly 30,000 people. It came out to 1 person per 10 families. It was very organized. They gave everyone a card that had ethnicity and what group they were on it. This made it easier to sort them out. Some of the Tutis were forced to be slaves. The Tutsi women were often victims of sexual violence. This all happened in 100 days.
This is such a sad story. I didn't know anything about this until now. I wonder why because this was a huge killing in a very little amount of time of. I don't understand how you could do that to someone even if you didn't like them or disagreed with them.
