Rwanda; Blog Post #16

Rwanda’s genocide has taken a toll on Africa like no other recent conflict has. Between a half a million to a million people were massacred. (Probably very brutally…) Starting from April to July 1994 (hey a few months before my birthday!) very extremist (and I mean very very extreme) political groups had organized this massacre. They had primarily targeted the Tutsi ethnic group. (Sounds like to me the holocaust is starting all over again). Which was a minority group compared to their group, the Hutu. They also killed anyone who were against the killings or was active in the pro-democracy movement.Rwanda's population consists of three ethnic groups: Hutus about 88% of the population, Tutsis about 11%, and Twa pygmies about 1%. The republic of Rwanda was torn apart due to ethnic division. It ended up becoming a civil war between mostly the Hutus groups and the Tutsis groups. The Tutsiled Rwanda Patriotic Front was victorious and has formed a new government. There were many refugees that had fled Rwanda Going to neighboring Zaire (about 2 million people), Tanzania (about 480,000 people), Burundi (about 200,000people) and Uganda (about 10,000people).
