The Revolutionary War was the war which gave us our freedom from Great Britain. It is also known as the American War of Independence. It was between Great Britain and the 13 colonies that had formed on the north america continent. The colonies disliked the laws that Great Britain was placing over them and the high taxes on all of the materials that were being imported, such as tea.
The war began on April 19, 1775, with the battle on Lexington and Concord. The cause of this wars outbreak was Great Britain placing troops in Boston which was claimed to be a rebellion. With the colonies not having a national government they were not prepared for the war at all. The delegates all joined together to make the first national government which was called the Continental Congress. The congress then voted to organize an army and navy. George Washington was voted the commander of the army. He was an wealthy Virginia landowner.
On July 4, 1776 the colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. In which they declared their independence from Great Britain which would lead to us becoming the United States of America
