I am researching about the Tennessee Valley Authority and the three men who criticized the New Deal. The Tennessee Valley Authority covers most of the southeastern region of the United States. This company is owned by the government, and it was created in 1933. Its purpose is to generate electricity, making of fertilizers, and creating a better economy for the people of the Tennessee Valley. One of the main purposes of the TVA was to generate enough electricity to modernize the region. The TVA owns many dams for hydroelectricity, fossil-fuel plants, and a few nuclear power plants. The TVA makes about 817 million dollars per year. The three people that I am researching about are Charles Coughlin, Francis Townsend, and Huey Long.At first, Huey Long liked the New Deal, but after a while, he didn't agree with it. Long wanted to become the president. He wanted more of a equal society in terms of wealth. One of his presidential promises for Americans was, "Every Man a King." In 1935, Long claimed to have around 27,000 Share-Our-Wealth clubs with 7.5 million people a part of them. Later that year, Huey Long was assassinated by Dr. Carl Weiss.Charles Coughlin was a priest in Michigan. He had a church service that was broadcast on the radio. About 40 million people listened to his broadcasts every week. Like Long, Coughlin was once a supporter of the New Deal, but later didn't support it. In the late 1930s, his radio show was canceled, because the Catholic Church didn't approve of it.Francis Townsend was a doctor that wanted a pension for the elderly. This proposal lead to the creation of the Social Security Act. Francis wanted for every retired citizen over the age of 60 to receive some money so they could live more comfortably. This plan became known as the Townsend Plan.
