Abortion -- Republicans oppose abortion and support adoption. They strongly support educating teens and parents about the health risks that come with sexual activity. They also support doubbling abstinence education funding. They oppose school-based clinics that provide referrals, counseling, and related services for contraception and abortion. They also believe that all unborn children have a right to life.
Flag Burning -- Republicans feel that flag burning is a form of expression that is spiteful and vengeful. They says that it is designed to hurt, not to persuade. They support a Constitutional Amendment on banning flag burning.
Gun Control -- Republicans strongly support the right for individuals to own guns. They believe law-abiding citizens throughout the country should be able to own firearms in their homes for self-defense. They oppose federal licensing of lawabiding gun owners and national gun registration as a violation of the Second Amendment and an invasion of privacy of honest citizens.
Environmental Laws -- Republicans believe environmental stewardship is best advanced where property is privately held. Republicans will safeguard private property rights by enforcing the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment and by providing just compensation whenever private property is needed to achieve a compelling public purpose. Republicans support President Bush’s Clear Skies proposal to reduce power plant emissions.
Affirmative Action Laws -- Republicans support aggressive, proactive measures to ensure that no individual is discriminated against because of race, national origin, gender, or other characteristics covered by civil rights laws. They support affirmative access-taking steps to ensure that disadvantaged individuals of all colors and ethnic backgrounds have the opportunity to compete economically.
Immigration -- Republicans believe that we must know the identity of all visitors who enter the US, and we must know when they leave. They also believe that we must strengthen our Border Patrol to stop illegal crossings, and equip the Border Patrol with the tools, technologies, structures, and sufficient force necessary to secure the border. Also, seek stiff penalties for those who smuggle illegal aliens into the country and for those who sell fraudulent documents. Republicans support reforming the immigration system to ensure that it is legal, safe, orderly and humane. They also support measures to ensure that the immigration system is structured to address the needs of national security.
Minimum Wage -- Some Republican conservatives favor a policy of letting the free market establish wages. Others believe there should be no minimum wage at all. Senator Orrin Hatch and Representative Steve Bartlett have fought against recent attempts to raise the minimum wage. They Believe that a higher wage will increase unemployment and inflate prices, which actually would hurt people. Although some moderate Republicans are also somewhat against a minimum wage, most believe that entry-level positions deserve enough pay to live on and that raising the minimum wage does not necessarily increase unemployment or inflation.
Health Care -- Republicans support important scientific research without undermining the fundamental ethical principles that have guided medical research in this country for decades. They especially encourage a stronger emphasis on adult stem cell and cord blood stem cell research.Republicans oppose withholding of care or treatment because of disability, age, or infirmity. They also oppose euthanasia and assisted suicide. Republicans reject any notion of government-run universal health care. They support the effort of President Bush and the Republican Congress to reform the medical liability system that is raising health care costs and limiting patients’ access to doctors. They also support a reformed Medicare program.
Taxes -- Republicans support the following ideas:
*Replace the five current tax brackets with four lower ones, ensuring all taxpayers significant tax relief while targeting it especially toward low-income workers.
*Help families by doubling the child tax credit to $1,000, making it available to more families, and eliminating the marriage penalty.
*Encourage entrepreneurship and growth by capping the top marginal rate, ending the death tax, and making permanent the Research and Development credit.
*Promote charitable giving and education.
*Foster capital investment and savings to boost today’s dangerously low personal savings rate.
Republicans believe that low interest rates open up more housing opportunities than any government program, and that tax reform should continue to encourage homeownership. They support a full repeal of the death tax and a tax break for caring for the elderly.
Military Spending -- Republicans support increases in military spending. They consider increases in military spending needed for defense.
Death Penalty -- Republicans support the death penalty. Republicans support courts that have the option to impose the death penalty in capital murder cases. They think that the death penalty is an effective deterrent. Republicans say that the death penalty stopped judges from releasing criminals because of prison overcrowding, made it harder to file lawsuits about prison conditions, and pushed states to make sure violent felons do time.
Gay Marriage -- Most Republicans are anti-gay marriage. They believe in more traditional practices. They believe that a child would be better off and supported if there is a mother and a father, not two mothers or two fathers.
Prayer In School -- Republicans strongly support voluntary student-initiated prayer in school without governmental interference. They also support access to school facilities by student religious groups.
US Role In The World--Iraq -- Republicans support the Iraq War and believe the United States did not make a mistake by sending troops there. They reject the idea of a timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq. Most Republicans believe that having troops in Iraq is making the situation in Iraq better. They believe that the U.S. has obligation to establish security in Iraq. Republicans also say that Iraq will be better off after the war than it was before the war.
US Role In The World--Afghanistan -- Republicans say that today Afghanistan is a world away from the nightmare of the Taliban. They believe that Afghanistan has a good and just president. They feel that the threat by Afghanistan is no longer there and everyone is safe now.
Us Role In The United Nations -- Republicans "attack" the United Nations and international law. They accuse the UN of being "scandal-ridden and corrupt" and alleged discrimination against Israel. Republicans believe that the UN should not prevent our joining with other democracies to protect our vital national interests.
