Research has shown that the Mediterranean Diet (rich in fish, fruits, nuts, and olive oil) may be a solution to type 2 diabetes. According to a recent study people that are on a low-fat diet and people with type 2 diabetes, who ate a Mediterranean diet lost more weight and went longer without blood-sugar-lowering medication, according to a recent study."A Mediterranean diet isn't a magic diet, but it has a lot of features that we know are generally healthful," said endocrinologist and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Missouri, Kansas City School of Medicine, Dr. Richard Hellman, who was not involved in the research.
A Mediterranean diet includes vegetables, whole grains, fish, poultry, and healthy fats, such as olive oil. For the new study, 215 overweight people that were recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, were assigned randomly to either a low-fat or low carbohydrate Mediterranean diet.
After four years researchers from the Second University of Naples, in Italy, found out that only 44 percent of the people in the experiment needed blood-sugar-lowering medications, compared to the 70 percent of people that stuck to the low-fat diet. People with type 2 diabetes can keep their blood sugars low with a good diet and exercise, unlike people diagnosed with type 1 diabetes that need insulin shots to maintain a healthy blood-sugar.
