Since I was gone on last Monday I got to pick the tpoic of my choice so I chose Polio. All I know about polio is that Roosevelt had it I think ?
Polio is short for Poliomyelitis, and is a disease that is caused by viruses. It starts in the nervous system. It makes your muscles floppy and then leads to paralyzed. In 1921 Polio plagued american and around that time is when Roosevelt foung out he had it.
Vaccines for polio had begun in the early 1900s but they had failed because researchers didnt know there was more than one virus.
In 1952 Dr. Jonas Salk developed the first successful vaccine for polio. He had been working on the vaccine since 1947.
In 1957 Albert Bruce Sabin came up with another vaccine, but it was oral.
The Sulk vaccine is given in two injections one month apart and booster every five years. The Sabin vaccine is given in three doses the first two years of life and booster when child starts school. Another booster is not needed untill child is exposed to polio or goes to a different country.
I think it would suck to get polio because i love to move and run around. I feel soo bad for the people who got it especially children because they should get to run and play.
