"We can afford all that we need; but we cannot afford all that we want," said Franklin Roosevelt. I selected this quote because I think it fits perfectly with the 1920's and the 1930's. Mr.FDR worked to create programs though the New Deal which helped the people who were the most by the Great Depression. The New Deal was one of many things that FDR did to help Americans during his presidency, which is why he was the most well like and most respected presidents of his decade.Franklin Delano Roosevelt or most commonly know as FDR was in my opinion one of the best presidents in our countries history. Roosevelt served four terms from March 4, 1933 to April 12, 1945 and died during his fourth term. He was born on January 30, 1882 and died on April 12, 1945. He was son of James Roosevelt who was a businessman and a financier, and his stong willed mother Sara Delano. He also had one half brother James. In 1905 he married Anna Eleanor Roosevelt who was his fifth cousin once removed and a niece to Theodore Roosevelt. Together they we parents to one daughter Anna Eleanor, and four sons, James, Elliott, Franklin Jr. and John Aspinwall. During Franklins middle age life he developed polio, a fearsome and incurable disease that paralyzed his legs. He founded the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation, which continues to help people with their physical disabilities, which I think is another one of his great accomplishments.Roosevelt spent 12 years in office and had an great impact on Americans and our hirstory. He took seat in office during the Great Depression. The first so called "Hundred Days" of Roosevelt's term weredays in which he passed 15 major laws. Some of the important legislative acts of his New Deal included:-Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)- hired more than three million men to work on various projects.-Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)- used the Tennessee River to provide electricity for the depressed area.-National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA)- created the Public Works Administration to provide aid to cities for construction and the National Recovery Administration to help businesses.-Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)- corrected abuses which led to the stock market crash.-Works Progress Administration (WPA)- hired many people for a variety of projects including in the arts.-Social Security Act - Created the Social Security System.FDR was also very much into the war effect and settling debutes. He created the Lend-Lease Act to help Britain by delivering old destroyers in exchange for military bases around the world. One of my favorite war effects of FDR was how he met with Winston Churchill to create the Atlantic Charter, a plan to defeat Nazi Germany. "Important victories for the US and the allies included the Battle of Midway, the North African campaign, the capture of Sicily, the island-hopping campaign in the Pacific, and the D-Day invasion". With a Nazi defeat inevitable, Roosevelt met with Churchill and Joseph Stalin at Yalta where they promised a compromise to Soviet Russia if the Soviets entered the war against Japan. This agreement would eventually led to the Cold War.From what i have researched I greatly admire Franklin Roosevelt. He made many bright choices during Americas hard times which lead us into the right direction. I dont think there could of been a better hard working man choosen for president, and do what he did over his 12 year presidency.Sources: http://americanhistory.about.com/od/prohibitionera/a/prohibition.htmhttp://www.u-s-history.com/pages/h1578.html
