The presidential election on 1956 was basically a repeat of the previous election on 1952. In the 52’ election republican Dwight D.Eisenhower beat out democratic Adlia Stevenson.

President Eisenhower was more popular, but had health problems which were a concern. Stevenson was popular with the liberals but held no previous office. Neither of them paid much attention to the Civil Rightsissue, and Eisenhower had ended the Korean war, and had the hearts of thepeople so he was elected in a landslide.

Eisenhower’s running mate was Richard Nixon, and Stevenson’s was Estes Kefauver. Eisenhower had 457 electoral votes and 41 states won, while Stevenson had only 73 and 7 states won(this is when Alaskaand Hawaiiweren’t states yet, but they were states for the next election).
