Machine Organization-

  • Like a pyramid: local precinct workers and captains at the base
  • City boss at top, Ward bosses in the middle, Workers and Captains at the bottom

Corruption-

  • Kickback system
  • Granting favors to big business
  • Spoils system/patronage- started with Andrew Jackson, "Take what you want" 
  • Political boss hired/fired police

Boss William Marcy Tweed-

  • Boss of Democratic political machine in NYC
  • Building Tweed worked in was Tammany Hall
  • Doesn't care about law, justice
  • Cares about making himself rich

Reforming Government-

  • Pendleton Civil Service Act- 1883: Required most government jobs to be given through a merit system based on test scores
  • 1883- 14,000/117,000 gov't jobs required test
  • 1900- 100,000/200,000 gov't jobs required test
  • Started cleaning up government

Ch. 8.2:

  • Between 1865-1895- States passed laws requiring 12-16 weeks annually of school
  • Classes focused on the "3 R's"- Reading, "riting". &" rithmetic"
  • Memorization and recitation was very common

Religion in schools-

  • Public schools had mandatory readings from the Protestant Bible
  • Catholic communities set up parochial schools to give their kids a Catholic Education

Higher Education-

  • From 1880-1920- College enrollment quadrupled

-What did local government do to reform itself during the Progressive Era?
