we talked about our new project for chapter 9. we need 5 sources. chapter 9 is about fixing the problems in chapter 5-8.. Progessive Era-- helping common person READ CHAPTER 9... before after and during the Era.... roles today/ present.. im doing FARE WAGES..Fair wages – minimum wages, pay differences between men, women & children....we went over the test questions and if anyone had any questions about them.. im going to post my old blogs on here so i can study from one blog5.1 cultures clash on the prarie-white men didnt think of indians as peaceful people-didnt get along with them because of that-horse and buffalo-never had any until late 1500's-buffallo was a main food sourcxe in the 1800's-horses used to explore-most families lived together-- extended close together-thought of land as a whole instead of individual land-kids learned through stories and urban legends-settlers never thought indians owned the land because they never did anything to improve it-most migration to the West happened because gold, silver, farming, hunting, adventuring, sheep, cattle, escape problems, law.-1834- great plains served as reservations for reservations-1850's -government designated areas for specific tribes-many people wanted to treat indians with respect, but they had to change their beliefs into a white culture-DAWES ACT- gave 160 acres of land to individual native americans, land that had been broken up off reservations..not who they are.-killed off the buffalo.-by 1932 two thirds of the land that belonged to Native americans was taken away in the great plains-1800: 65 million buffalo. 1890 fewer than 1000 remained-place where buffalo were safe;led to the creation of Yellowstone-cattle became worth money-cowboys; worked 10-14 days-season began in spring-"long drive" , physically moving cattle from texas to kansas area (where railroads were)-250 to 300 cattle to one person-hard conditions-instead of hearding, people had less cattle that yeilded more beef5.2SETTLING IN THE GREAT PLAINS-government called it the GREAT AMERICAN DESERT back in the day-the main reason they moved over--railroads-homestead act--- gave 160 free acres of land in the west for farming to people who didnt go against the government( they also had to improve the land in some way). only ten percent of the land that was given away, was used for farming-the act ended in 1884, that started a new Act that was more strict-henry Washburn wanted to preserve Wyoming because of its beauty-farmers who went west faced many hard taks, blizzards droughts, locus plagues-trees were hard to find. many people built their homes from the land they farmed-sod houses-- no materials(trees) fire proof-everyone had to help on the farm.. spread out-new farming inventions helped out a lot..more profecient, faster-EXPENSIVE MACHINERY(DEBT)-had to borrow moneyCh. 5.3:-What problems did farmers face on the Great Plains?-Who were the Populists and what did they believe in?5.3-farmers and the populast movement-most crops were failing for farmers in 1800s-railroads were charging excesive prices for storage-grange--group of people that goes against railroads-farmers-populist--peoples party- regular people fighting back to the rich-Populist-what they wanted(help the common person out)increase in money supply- causing inflationgraduated income tax-didnt have it back then..based off how much you make. the more you make the more you paydirect election of US senators-people elected-- Populists for itsingle terms for pres. and vice pres.secret ballot-- we now haverestrictions on immagration8 hour work days6.1 expansion industry-Ch. 6.1:-What caused the Industrial revolution to really take off in the late 1800's?1.tons of natural resources-need resources to make stuff-not as much importing 2.government support for businesses 3.Captains of industry 4. growing urban population-provided cheap labor and markets.5. oil, railroads, steel, bessemer process(making steel cheaply)-What were some new inventions in the late 1800's and what affect did they have on people's lives? the light bulb--thomas edison( you can see/ work at night)--christopher sholes, type writer( computers now, typing), alexander grahmbell,telephone(communication)-what allowed(items, things) the industrial revolution to start?1.
