Segregation and discrimination; African Americans tried to excersize their new rights. They always keept trying to maintain their rights. To vote, everyone had to pass the literacy test and pay a certain fee. The African Americans usually didn't have much money. If whites failed the test and couldn't pay, they could still vote because of the granfather clause which said that if your grandfather voted, you could vote. Segregation; separation of the races.Had informal rules; Belittled and humiliated African Americans. Dumb rules like the AAs couldn't shake hands with whites and they also had to take their hats off for whites also. AAs faced punishment or death for braking racial etiquette.Because of discrimination in the south, AAs tried to move to the north and found out that there was discrimination in the north also. Most employers usually employed blacks as a last resort. blacks were forced into bad cities.Discrimination in the West; Railroads hired Mexicans because they were used to the hot, dry climate. They worked for less money than other ethnic groups. Forced into a debt peonage; which means that the mexicans were in debt to the owners and then they would have to work for free to pay off the debt.Chinese discrimination; job competition forced them into segregated areas. Discrimination caused economic issues.Native American discrimination; 14th amendment did not give the citizenship. Whites pushed them out of their reservations and were very crowded. Started to lose Native American costoms. Large number of NAs fought in WW1. Gov. passed inkian citizenship act. that's how native Americans earned citizenship.Ch. 8.3:-What laws and restrictions were put on African-Americans and other minorities after Reconstruction ended?----Explain the significance of Plessy v. Ferguson.---Ch. 8.4:American Leisure; stated that middle class americans could do the same activites at the richer people. Amusement Parks were bult on the outskirts of cities so more people could come. Rides made by trolly car builders. George W. Ferris built the first farris wheel. He was origonally a bridge builder.1873; people started to tennis.
