CONTInued-by 1932 two thirds of the land that belonged to Native americans was taken away in the great plains-1800: 65 million buffalo. 1890 fewer than 1000 remained-place where buffalo were safe;led to the creation of Yellowstone-cattle became worth money-cowboys; worked 10-14 days-season began in spring-"long drive" , physically moving cattle from texas to kansas area (where railroads were)-250 to 300 cattle to one person-hard conditions-instead of hearding, people had less cattle that yeilded more beefWHAT I SHOULD PROBABLY KNOW FOR 5.1-Describe Native American culture.-Why did settlers/people move to the Great Plains?-Do did the US gov't deal with Native Americans in the mid to late 1800's? What were their policies?-Describe a cowboy's life.5.2SETTLING IN THE GREAT PLAINS-government called it the GREAT AMERICAN DESERT back in the day-the main reason they moved over--railroads-homestead act--- gave 160 free acres of land in the west for farming to people who didnt go against the government( they also had to improve the land in some way). only ten percent of the land that was given away, was used for farming-the act ended in 1884, that started a new Act that was more strict-henry Washburn wanted to preserve Wyoming because of its beauty
