  • Born in New York in 1858
  • Born into a wealthy family-1858
  • Suffered from asthma- sickly kid
  • Went to Harvard
  • Good athlete- wrestled and boxed at Harvard
  • Police commissioner
  • Assistant secretary of US Navy
  • Became youngest president at 42 in 1901
  • Police officer of NYC for 2 years
  • Leader of "Rough Riders"
  • Governor of New York-1898-1900
  • Owned and ran a ranch in Dakota Territory

-Square Deal

  • Big businesses victimized workers
  • Used to describe the carious progressive reforms sponsored by the Roosevelt administration
  • 3 C's- Conservation of natural resources, Control of corporations, and Consumer protection

-Breaking up strikes

  • 1902 Coal strike
  • 140,000 coal miners went on strike
  • Wanted 20% raises, 9 hour work days, and a union
  • Mine operators refused to bargain
  • Roosevelt called them to the White House
  • Miners got what they wanted
  • Gave up their right to strike for 3 years
  • Strikes had to be intervened with government- every time there was a strike, they had to converse with the government

-Regulating railroads

  • Interstate Commerce Act- 1887
  • Interstate Commerce Commission
  • Elkins Act- 1903
  • Illegal for railroad officials to give and shippers to receive rebates
  • Couldn't change set rates
  • Hepburn Act- 1906
  • Limited distribution of free railroad passes
  • Gave ICC power to set max rates
  • Boosted government power to regulate railroads

-Regulating food and drugs

  • Manufacturers claimed curing
  • Children's medicine: Opium, cocaine, alcohol
  • Dr. Harvey Washington Wiley, criticized harmful products
  • 1906- Pure Food and Drug Act- Teddy Roosevelt
  • Stronger sales, canceled bans, excessive labels
  • Passed the Meat Inspection Act- 1906

-Conservation

  • Government didn't pay attention to forests and nature
  • Cut down 45 million acres of trees
  • Government stood by- Private investigators
  • Pioneer farmers vs. forests
  • Coal companies cluttered land
  • Lumber companies ignored affects
  • There was no replanting of the trees
  • Cities would dump waste because there was a lot of open space
