Why did the US stay isolationist until the late 1800’s?1. we wanted to avoid foreign wars2. we had a weak army and navy3. we had to build up the US firsta. industryb. governmentc. internal improvements4. we had the slavery issued to deal with- CIVAL war and Roconstructions5. the two oceans kept us geographically isolateda. the lack of technology6. we had ‘the west’ to settle7. we had vast natural re3sources here in the US.8. followed Pres. Washington’s advicea. “stay out of foreign wars and alliances”.Chapter Ten – America Claims an EmpireUS Taking Hawaii(key question)-missionaries work and sugarcane plantation are the main reason we got into this.-Sugarcane was sold to the US.-mostly Americans and immigrants who lived there, not many Hawaiians-first got involved to Christianize Hawaii and sugarcane plantations.-all the money in Hawaii was owned by white Americans.-US imported most Hawaiian sugar (all tax free)-McKinley Terrif was passed (sugar)-This is how we take them over, and is not very just!- Plantation owners are ticked off because they had to pay fees, and wanted US to annex the island to get rid of fees, not Hawaiians.-King of Hawaii was forced to give voting rights only to land owners, which was technically only the whites!-suddenly white American land owners could vote and Hawaiians couldn’t! ( most anyways)-King eventually died and his sister took queen. Liliuokalani-Hawaii became a state in 1959 under McKinley-Cuba-Got control of Cuba in 1898 through the Treaty of Paris-Treaty of Paris ended warNEWW!!!!!Russian-Britian War-BrePurchase of Alaska-Andrew Johnson- Presidnet of the time-US came in and got control of surrounding areas-Peurto Rico-Me and Jenna-changed spelling of it-US changed almost everyting about Peurto Rico-brought currency into it-US postal services-19 years after war granted US citizenship-Foraker Act- got rid of military rule -military would withdrawl -state governor. Pres of US selected that as well as upper house, and people of Peuto rico selected lower house. as time went on, people were more and more important and as of today, the president of US does not select anything, although we still own that country.. they may be drafted in US military, they are US citizens. may move freely among US. involoved in MISS US pagent, cannot vote for president though, pretected by US laws, they have rejected both statehood and independence in the past. they enjoyhaveing the best of both worlds. like benefits from US. they have to pay US taxes as well.Cuba-ZachTeler Ammendment-a joint resolution-guarrenteed cuban independence after the war-cubans do not like the fact that we are in their country after the war-they want us to give them independence and leave-they didnt just hate spain, they just wanted their independence.. we actually helped them with many big deseases, such as YELLOW FEVER. we built schools, we basically helped modernize them. ,btut they still wanted us out.-Platt Ammendment : we would draw our troops to them. we willnot leave your country until you put the PLATT AMMENDMENT intoyour constitution. -1cuba could now make treaties with foreighn countries2US could intervien in Cuba whenever we felt needed to keep order3cuba could not go into debt4cuba had to give or lease US land for navel base- still communists, ROULE is in order today-we ultimimaltey gave them complete independence.-interested in cuba because the navel base, sugarcane plantations, tobacco plantations, stargetic location, military, base to evenutally make a canal in Central American, which is now Panama Canal.China- Austin-Huge trade between US and China.-suddenly became very very close to China., we made anddo make a lot of money from China-Open Trade Policy- carved up by Great Brittan, and so on.. free trade with China for all countries in other words. The countries liked it and agreed to it, but they would never sign it because they did not want to give up all of their rights. (control of a lot of China's cities)-John Hay-saved china independence.OFF TOPIC!-bruns says that if there ever are 51 states, he will design a new flag, and have one star.. the star represents your state! hahaahahahk time in!
