Why did the US stay isolationist until the late 1800’s?1. we wanted to avoid foreign wars2. we had a weak army and navy3. we had to build up the US firsta. industryb. governmentc. internal improvements4. we had the slavery issued to deal with- CIVAL war and Roconstructions5. the two oceans kept us geographically isolateda. the lack of technology6. we had ‘the west’ to settle7. we had vast natural re3sources here in the US.8. followed Pres. Washington’s advicea. “stay out of foreign wars and alliances”.Chapter Ten – America Claims an EmpireUS Taking Hawaii(key question)-missionaries work and sugarcane plantation are the main reason we got into this.-Sugarcane was sold to the US.-mostly Americans and immigrants who lived there, not many Hawaiians-first got involved to Christianize Hawaii and sugarcane plantations.-all the money in Hawaii was owned by white Americans.-US imported most Hawaiian sugar (all tax free)-McKinley Terrif was passed (sugar)-This is how we take them over, and is not very just!- Plantation owners are ticked off because they had to pay fees, and wanted US to annex the island to get rid of fees, not Hawaiians.-King of Hawaii was forced to give voting rights only to land owners, which was technically only the whites!-suddenly white American land owners could vote and Hawaiians couldn’t! ( most anyways)-King eventually died and his sister took queen. Liliuokalani-Hawaii became a state in 1959 under McKinley-Cuba-Got control of Cuba in 1898 through the Treaty of Paris-Treaty of Paris ended war
