Teddy Roosevelt

  • Born in New York in 1858
  • Suffered from asthma
  • Police commissioner and assistant secretary of U.S. Navy
  • Youngest president at 42 years old in 1901
  • Was good at athletics
  • Not supposed to be president 
  • Not very well liked because he dressed like a rich man
    • began a cowboy (hunting, wrestling, went to Harvard)
  • Fought in Spanish American War
  • Helped the common person (Middle and Lower class)
    • Used his popularity to persuade people
    • Did not help black people that much (just white people)
  • Broke a lot of Trusts (monopolies)
  • Passed Meat inspection Act (1906)

Teddy and the Square Deal

  • Big businesses victimized workers
  • Used to describe the various progressive reforms sponsored by the Roosevelt administration
  • 3 C's
    • Conservation of natural resources
    • Control of corporations
    • Consumer protection

1902 Coal Strike

  • 140,000 workers went on strike
  • wanted 20% raise and 9 hour work days, and a union 
  • Roosevelt called them to the White House
  • Miners got what they wanted
    • Gave up their right to go on strike for 3 years
  • Strikes had to be intervened with government 

Railroad Regulation

  • Interstate Commerce Commission- enfolittle power
  • Illegal for railroad officials to give and shippers to receive rebates 
  • Couldn't change set rates
  • Limited distribution of free railroad passes (Bribery)
  • Boosted gov't power to regulate railroad

Pure Food and Drug Act

  • Manufacturing claimed false things
  • Children's Medicine: Opium, Cocaine, Alcohol
  • 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act
    • Taking out medicines that had false testimonies
  • Stronger sales

Conservation and Natural Resources

  • Government didn't pay attention to preserving their land
    • Cut down 45 acres 
  • Private investigators ruined land
  • Pioneer farmers VS. Forests
  • Coal companies Cluttered land
  • Lumber companies ignored affects, not replanting trees
  • Cities dumped wastes 

Conservation Measures

  • Teddy R. condemned views of America, Primary Concern
  • John Muir convinced the president to replant 148 million acres of forest
  • 1.5 million Acres of Water- Power sites
  • National Reclamation Act. (New lands act)

Civil Rights of Roosevelt

  • Appointed African American, Charleston South Caroline
  • NAACP- Help Black people with rights (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People)
  • Dismissed Regiment of African American soldiers
  • Conspiracy in protecting others
  • Presidents+ Not Caring= Racial Inequality
