  • Went to Dakota territory and became a cowboy
  • served as US Civil Service Commissioner from 1889-1895
  • Fought in Spanish-American war in 1898 as leader
  • governor of New York
  • Vice president of US in 1901

  • broke up a lot of trusts

-Square Deal

  • big businesses victimized workers
  • Used to describe the various progressive reforms sponsored by the Roosevelt administration
  • 3 C's- Conservation of natural resources, Control of corporations, and Consumer protection

-Breaking up strikes

1902 Coal Strike

  • 140,000 coal miners went on strike
  • wanted 20% raises, 9 hour work days, and a union
  • mine operators refused to bargain
  • Roosevelt called them to White House
  • Miners go what they wanted
  • gave up their right to strike for 3 years
  • strikes had to be intervened with government

-Regulating railroads

  • Interstate Commerce Act- 1887
  • Interstate Commerce Commission- little power
  • Elkins Act 1903
  • illegal for railroad officials to give and shippers to receive rebates
  • Couldn't change set rates
  • Hepburn Act- 1906
  • Limited distribution of free railroad passes
  • Gave ICC power to set maxes
  • Boosted government power to regulate railroads

-Regulating food and drugs

Pure Food and Drug Act

  • manufacturers claimed curing
  • Children's medicine: Opium, Cocaine, Alcohol
  • Dr. Harvey Washington Wiley, criticized, harmful products
  • 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act
  • Stronger sales, canceled ban, excessive labels

  • Meat Inspection Act - 1906

-Conservation

  • Government did not pay attention, cutting down trees, 45 million acres
  • government stood by, private investigators
  • 19th century- Americans exploited natural environment
  • Pioneer farmer vs. Forests
  • Coal companies cluttered land
  • Lumber companies ignored affects, no replanting
  • Cities dumped waste

  • Teddy Roosevelt condemned views of America, primary concern
  • John Muir persuaded Roosevelt, 148 million acres of forest
