Tuesday: began Rome notes 

  • Latins 
    • Were the first Romans 
    • built the original settlement of Palatine Hill in Rome 
  • Greeks 
    • Came in after the Latins 
  • Etruscan's 
    • Came from northern Italy 
    • Skilled metal workers and engineers 
    • Had a writing system with an alphabet that the Romans adopted 
    • Greatly influenced Rome architecture 
    • Outside of Greece, the most advanced and well off civilization 
  • Early Republic 
    • Run by the Etruscan's
    • Ruled by a king,King Tarquin, until overthrown by Brutus  
    • Brutus was the Founder of the Roman Republic 
      • Republic - a form of government in which the power rests with the citizens who have a right to vote for their leaders 
    • Two Parties 
      • Patricians - wealthy landowners who had most of the power 
      • Plebeians - were farmers, artisans, and merchants that made up most of the population 

Wednesday: talked about the election and politics 

Thursday: talked more about the election and politics, and then took notes on Rome 

  • Punic wars 
    • Rome vs. Carthage 
    • Series of 3 wars and lasted 118 years 
    • First Punic War - fought for Sicily and the western Mediterranean, lasted 23 years
    • Second Punic War - was started by Carthage to get revenge from the previous loss, lasted 16 years 
      • Hannibal a brilliant carthaginian general led a massive attack on rome 
      • Using an army of 50,000 infantry, 9,000 calvalry, 60 elephants 
      • He lost half his men and most of the elephants before reaching the romans 
      • For almost ten year, hannibal marhces his men up and down Italy 
      • Rome retailiated and won 
    • Third Punic war - 50 years after the second 
      • Rome went on the offensive and laid siege to carthage 
      • Burnt cities and 50,000 people were sold into slaverly 
      • With Carthage out of the picture, Rome would continue its conquest in the upcoming decades
