Domestic Policy vs Foreign Policy

Diplomacy-the profession, activity, or skill of managing international relations, typically by a country's representatives abroad.

Imperialism-a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.

Militarism-the belief or desire of a government or people that a country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests.

Nationalism-patriotic feeling, principles, or efforts.

Sphere-an area of activity, interest, or expertise; a section of society or an aspect of life distinguished and unified by a particular characteristic.

Protectorate-the position or period of office of a Protector, especially that in England of Oliver and Richard Cromwell.

Abitration- the use of an arbitrator to settle a dispute.

Old Diplomacy-'

Noninterventionest- the US did not intervere in foreign affairs, espically Europe's

Isolationst- the US acted alone in foreign affairs as compared to working with other nations

Passive and reactive- the US waited for events to occur and then acte accordingly

Imperialistic- Going out and conquering territory to create an empire

- Generally believes that US needs to lessen how much money we spend protecting other countries. Thos countries need to pay us more money for protection

- Other countries in the United Nations need to step up and pay more for the UN

- Great Britain, Germany, France, Austia-Hungary, Italy, Russia, United States, Ottoman Empire, Japan- most powerful in 1990

Friday-

Why did the US and other countries look to imperialism? 

- The western frontier was settled-1890.

- Brings military power and prestige to your country

- Naval bases and refunding stations

- Money for natural resources as well as opening new markets to sell your goods (trade)

- Belief in cultural superiority- White Man's Burden

-Mckinley to take them all and to educate filipinos, and uplift and civilize and christianize them

- Taft We must help our little brown brothers on the Philippines
