Describe the major accomplishments and problems of William Howard Traft's presidency -

  • Passed the Payne-Aldrich Tariff which reduced tariffs 
    • reduced tariffs on somethings but raised them on a lot of others
    • Promised to lower tariff and didn't really follow through 
  • Broke up many trust including the standard Oil Company in 1911 
  • 16th Amendment Passed(Started US income tax) 

Woodrow Wilson's New Freedom - 

  • Passed Clayton Anti-Trust Act(1914) STILL AROUND TODAY
    • Could break up monopolies 
    • Labor Unions were given the right to exist 
    • Strikes boycotts, picketing etc. became legal 
  • Federal Trade Commission was established in 1914 STILL AROUND TODAY 
    • Investigated companies for monopolistic practices 
    • Will go and break up monopolies if they aren't following the rules 
  • Federal Reserve System STILL AROUND TODAY 
    • America needed stronger banks 
    • federal Reserve Act in 1913 
    • Divided the nation int 12 districts --- regional central bank in each district 
    • "Bankers Bank" 
    • Federal Reserve banks could issue new paper money in emergency situations 
    • Aslso, helped with giving out loan $$ 
    • Banks within the system helped other from closing due to lack of money 
  • 17th, 18th, and 19th Amendments were passed during his term 
    • Direct elections of senators(1913) 
    • Prohibition (1919) 
      • out law of alcohol 
      • last 13 to 14 years 
    • Women's Vote (1920)
